The world around us is constantly buzzing, and it can be hard to find time for ourselves. Between work, errands, chores, family and relationships, it’s not always easy to do the things we love to do.

As a society, we are told to stay busy and get things done, rarely putting ourselves first. But what happens when all we do is work to please other people or meet a deadline? We get burnt out.

Burn out impacts both our physical and mental health. If someone is overworked, they most likely feel stressed or sad, which can lead to adverse physical effects. Our mental health is closely connected to our physical health.

For example, studies show that mental health issues can lead to sleeping problems, digestive issues and even other chronic diseases. If we don’t feel well mentally, chances are that our bodies don’t feel well either.

That’s why it’s important to take care of yourself, even when you are busy. Finding a fraction of time to relax and wind down helps your brain stop moving so fast. Everyone deserves to slow down, and finding a hobby that takes your mind away from the everyday stressors of life, is a great way to improve both your physical and mental health.

For all you quilters out there, relaxation comes from working on projects that are near and dear to your hearts. Quilting, crocheting, knitting or any type of crafting is a great way to get lost in your art. You can focus on yourself and your skills, and work to accomplish a goal. Finishing a quilt can give you a sense of accomplishment that maybe you are not getting from your work. Everyone deserves to reach their goals, and finishing a quilt is no easy feat. No matter what hobby you decide to take up, you have a new opportunity to practice some self care.

Quilting can help you take some much needed time for yourself, but it can also be a good source of community and connections. Quilting clubs or conventions can bring people together and help people learn from one another. Self care does not just mean spending time alone, it can be anything that makes you feel happy and relaxed.

No matter what is on your to-do list, write down some time for yourself. Feeling burnt out and stressed does not do any good for your physical and mental health. It’s time to put yourself first, and perhaps quilting is the avenue to get body and mind back on track!
