HEAT Press Batting Together in black is the batting-joining tape for dark quilts. Pair it with black batting, where a white tape could shadow through dark fabric at the seam. It lets you piece leftover batting into a batt the size you need instead of pinning and hand-stitching extra pieces on.
The tape is a soft, thin cloth tape, 1-1/2" wide by 10 yards, made in the USA. It fuses batting or batting-and-fabric together to fit a specific size, to enlarge or to reinforce, and stays needle-easy for hand or machine quilting. Iron settings are the key to a good bond, so test on scraps of your batting first.
When you are adding width to a large batt, around 93" or more, set weights on both sides of the seam to hold the pieces in place while you press. The batting may look flat right after pressing; it fluffs back up as it cools.

- Black or white batting tape?
- Match the tape to the batting. Use black tape on black batting under dark quilts so a light line cannot shadow through the top at the seam. Use the white tape on natural, white and bleached battings. Heat Press Batting Together (White)
- What iron setting should I use?
- Settings matter more than anything else with this tape. A Teflon-plate iron fuses it on low cotton. Without a Teflon plate, use a low synthetic setting for 100% polyester batting and usually a wool setting for mixed synthetic battings. Press with an up-and-down motion until the glue sets, then finish with a light shot of steam with the iron held just above the tape. Test on scraps of your batting first.
- How do I join two pieces of batting with it?
- Trim both edges straight and butt them together without overlapping. Tack the tape over the seam with an up-and-down motion of the iron, then apply heat again, adding a little light steam to fully melt the glue backing. On a large batt, such as adding width to a 93" piece, lay weights on both sides to keep the edges from drifting apart while you press.
- How many seams does a 10-yard roll join?
- Ten yards is 360" of tape, enough for about three seams the length of a 108" queen batt, or plenty of shorter joins on wall hangings and throws. For frequent joining, the 100-yard roll is the bulk option. 100-yard roll
- Can I quilt through the tape?
- Yes. It is a soft, thin cloth tape that stays flexible and stretches with the batting, so it needles easily by hand or machine and does not leave a stiff ridge under your quilting.
- The batting looks flat where I pressed. Did I ruin it?
- No. Batting often looks flat right after you apply heat, then lofts back up as it cools. If it stays flat or feels crisp, your iron was too hot; drop the setting for the next seam.
- What black batting does it pair with?
