Description
Hobbs Cloudloft is the thick one. At a full 5/8" loft it is the batting for puffy tied quilts, comforters and any project where you want the quilting to stand up in relief. This package is queen size, 90" x 108", pre-cut and ready for one bed quilt or a large comforter.
It is 100% polyester, resin-bonded and siliconized, which gives it an unusually even thickness and keeps the fibers from bearding or migrating through the top. It does not shrink, is non-allergenic and machine washable, and can be quilted 4" to 6" apart. Machine quilting is excellent; tying is the classic use. Hand quilting is possible but slower through the thickness. Because it is so lofty, we agree with Hobbs: make a sample sandwich first, launder it, and see how it needles by hand and machine before committing a big project to it.

Compare and choose
- Cloudloft vs Poly-Down: which Hobbs polyester do I want?
- Cloudloft is the high-loft one, about 5/8" thick, for tied quilts and puffy comforters. Poly-Down is Hobbs' lower-loft polyester for everyday machine and longarm quilting where you want light weight and drape without the puff. If the quilt is going on a frame, Poly-Down is the easier choice; if it is being tied, Cloudloft. Hobbs Poly-Down package
- Is Cloudloft good for a tied quilt?
- It is the classic choice. Tie every 4" to 6" and the batting stays put; the siliconized, resin-bonded fiber resists bearding and migration through the fabric, and it will not shrink in the wash.
- Can I quilt Cloudloft on a longarm or domestic machine?
- Yes, machine quilting is rated excellent. Expect to raise your hopping foot or presser foot for the thickness and keep designs open; dense quilting flattens a high-loft batting and wastes its point. Quilt a sample first to check tension.
- Cloudloft vs Quilters Dream Puff?
- Both are high-loft polyesters that do not shrink. Cloudloft is a 5/8" bonded batting rated for 4" to 6" spacing. Dream Puff is Quilters Dream's lofty polyester in their standard package sizes. If you need a size other than queen, Dream Puff gives you more options; if you want the thickest Hobbs makes in a package, this is it. Quilters Dream Puff package
- Will it shrink or need pre-washing?
- No on both counts. Polyester does not shrink, and Hobbs does not recommend pre-washing any of its battings.
- Is Cloudloft microwave-safe?
- No. Polyester is never microwave-safe. For bowl cozies use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
