Description

Hobbs 80/20 Heirloom is the shop-favorite batting for longarm and machine quilters who want a soft, low-loft layer that handles like cotton but holds its shape like a blend. Each roll is 96" wide by 30 yards: it covers queen tops and smaller in one piece, and the 30-yard length yields around ten queen quilts. For king-size tops, use the 120" roll.

The 80% natural cotton and 20% polyester blend pairs the breathability and antique drape of cotton with the strength and bearding resistance of polyester. It is needle-punched for stability, so it resists shifting and bunching under the needle and delivers crisp, even stitch definition on both light and dark fabrics.

Compare and choose

Hobbs 80/20 vs Warm & Natural: which should I buy?
Warm & Natural is 100% needle-punched cotton with a scrim: firmer, flatter, and it can be quilted up to 10" apart. Hobbs 80/20 Heirloom adds 20% polyester for a softer hand, more drape and a little more loft, and should be quilted within 4". Choose Hobbs 80/20 for a traditional, crinkled bed quilt; choose Warm & Natural for maximum flatness, wall hangings and wide stitch spacing. Warm & Natural 90" x 40 yd roll
80/20 blend vs 100% cotton: what is the difference?
Both are needle-punched and shrink 3-5% on first wash. The 20% polyester in Heirloom 80/20 adds strength and resilience and resists bearding; 100% cotton gives a slightly denser, more traditional feel and no synthetic fiber. If you want pure cotton from the same brand, use Hobbs Heirloom 100% Natural Cotton with Scrim in the same 96" width. Heirloom 100% Cotton with Scrim 96" roll
Natural or bleached: which do I need?
Natural (this roll) is right under most fabrics. Under white or very pale tops, the small cotton flecks in unbleached batting can shadow through. For white and pastel quilts use the Bleached 80/20, which comes on a 108" roll. Bleached 80/20 108" roll
96" vs 108" vs 120": which width for my quilt?
Pick a batting at least 4" wider than the shorter side of your quilt top. A queen top (about 90" x 108") fits a 96" roll with the 108" running along the roll. A king top (108" to 120" wide) does not fit a 96" roll in one piece; use a 120" roll. Hobbs 80/20 120" roll
Roll, board or package: which format should I buy?
The 30-yard roll is the lowest cost per yard and suits longarmers and frequent quilters. The 15-yard board is the same batting at half the commitment. Pre-cut packages are sized for one quilt (crib to king) and ship anywhere; fusible versions let you skip basting. Hobbs 80/20 pre-cut packages
Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
No. Rolls and boards ship only to the 48 contiguous states; orders from Alaska, Hawaii or outside the US are cancelled and refunded. Pre-cut packages ship to all locations. Shop packaged batting
Do I need to pre-wash this batting?
No. Pre-washing is not recommended. Expect 3-5% shrinkage in the first wash, which gives the soft, crinkled finish most quilters want.
What loft is Hobbs 80/20 Heirloom?
About 1/8", a low loft that gives a flat, traditional finish and shows off detailed quilting.
