Description

Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 made with color-fast dyed black cotton, pre-cut in Queen (90" x 108") and King (120" x 120") packages. This is the batting for quilts made with black or very dark fabrics. Natural batting under a black top does two annoying things: it can lighten the color slightly, and it sheds pale lint onto the surface while you quilt. Black 80/20 keeps the colors true and leaves nothing to pick off.

Everything else is standard Heirloom 80/20: 80% cotton, 20% polyester, bonded and needle-punched. Close quilting gives a flat, low-loft look; wider spacing (up to 4") raises the loft slightly. It quilts well by hand or machine and is machine washable once in the quilt. Do not use it under light fabrics; it will shadow through.

Compare and choose

Do I really need black batting for a dark quilt?
For mostly black or very dark tops, yes. Natural batting can slightly lighten dark fabrics and its pale fibers lint onto the surface during quilting. Black 80/20 keeps the colors true and the top clean. For a scrappy quilt with plenty of light fabric, stay with natural.
Will the black dye bleed?
No. The cotton is dyed color-fast before the batting is made. Shrinkage is the same 3-5% as natural Heirloom 80/20, and pre-washing is not recommended.
Can I use it under a quilt with some light fabrics?
Hobbs rates it not recommended for light fabrics: black fibers can shadow through white or pastel patches. If the top is mostly dark with a few light pieces, make a test sandwich with those fabrics before you decide. Hobbs natural 80/20 packages
Hobbs Black 80/20 vs Quilters Dream Select Black Poly?
Different fibers. Hobbs Black 80/20 is a cotton/poly blend: low loft, traditional hand, 3-5% shrinkage and a crinkled finish after washing. Dream Select Black Poly is 100% polyester: no shrinkage, no crinkle, a bit loftier and lighter. Choose Hobbs for a cotton feel; choose the poly for a quilt that must keep its exact size. Quilters Dream Select Black Poly package
Hobbs Black 80/20 vs Pellon Dark Blend?
Both are dark cotton/poly blends in a queen package. Pellon's Dark Blend is made with a scrim, which makes it a little firmer and more stable; Hobbs has no scrim and a softer drape, and also comes in a King package and a 108" roll for longarmers. Pellon Dark Blend queen package
Package, by the yard or roll?
A package is right for one quilt. By the yard covers odd sizes from the 108" roll. The full 108" x 30-yard roll is for longarmers who quilt dark tops regularly; note that rolls ship only to the 48 contiguous states, while packages ship anywhere. Hobbs Black 80/20 108" by the yard
