Hey everyone. Today you'll learn how to make a soft, simple baby quilt that celebrates a baby's first Christmas without overwhelming those sweet small pieces.
Here we go.
Meet the fabric first
We're working with Adorn Bloom Cream. It comes from the Adorn Collection. Makower UK designed it for Andover Fabrics.
This is 100% premium cotton. It is 44/45 inches wide. It is sold by the yard. That is your standard quilting cotton width, folks. It cuts clean. It presses nice and flat.
Look at the print. You get poinsettias, holly leaves, and delicate blooms. You get sparkling snowflakes, classic ornaments, and graceful scrolls.
The collection colors are rich and traditional. Think green, cream, red, and burgundy. This colorway sits on a soft cream ground. That cream keeps it light and calm. Then there are metallic gold accents. It feels festive, but still quiet enough for a nursery.
For a baby quilt, that balance matters. We are not reinventing the wheel here. We let the fabric do the talking.
Why this fabric suits a baby quilt
A baby quilt gets used hard, in the best way. It goes on the floor, over a stroller, and gets washed again and again.
You want a print that hides a little everyday life. This bloom print does both, and it looks special in photos too.
Cut it into big, simple squares and nothing gets lost. The poinsettias stay whole. The scrolls still flow. A tiny, fussy cut would chop all that beauty up. Big pieces are also faster to sew.
Materials list
- 1 1/4 yards of Adorn Bloom Cream for the main squares
- 1/2 yard of a coordinating solid or small print for alternating squares
- 1/3 yard for binding, cut into 2 1/2-inch strips
- Batting, about 42 inches by 52 inches
- Backing fabric, about 1 1/2 yards of 44/45-inch cotton, cut to 42 inches by 52 inches
- 50-weight cotton thread for piecing
- 50-weight thread for quilting, in a soft cream or pale gold
- An 80/12 needle for piecing and quilting on your home machine
- Rotary cutter, ruler, mat, pins or clips, and an iron
Finished size is about 36 inches by 46 inches. A handy size for crib, stroller, and floor.
Brief steps
Step 1: Press and cut big. Press flat. Cut twelve squares, 9 1/2 inches each, from the Bloom Cream. Center a pretty bloom in a few squares when you can. Then cut eight squares, 9 1/2 inches each, from your coordinating fabric.
Step 2: Lay it out. Arrange the squares in four rows of five, alternating Bloom Cream with your coordinating fabric. Step back and move one square if a color feels heavy.
Step 3: Sew the rows. Sew the squares in each row with a 1/4-inch seam. Press seams to one side. Then join the rows, nesting those seams as you go. Press the top flat.
Step 4: Layer and baste. Lay the backing right side down. Center the batting. Center the top right side up. Smooth from the middle out. Pin every 4 inches or so,.
Step 5: Quilt it simply. Stitch in the ditch along the seams first. Then add a gentle diagonal crosshatch or a soft meander across the squares. Try 10 to 12 stitches per inch. Slow down at seam crossings, or the needle can snap on a thick spot.
I have rushed a baby quilt before a shower. Oh my goodness, yes. The fix is not hard. Pull those wobbly stitches, press lightly, and sew it again slower. Nobody has to know.
Step 6: Bind it. Trim the sandwich square. Join your 2 1/2-inch binding strips. Sew the binding on, fold it over, and finish by machine for extra strength. Completely up to you, but machine binding holds up well to lots of washing.
Practical tips from my table
Prewash your fabrics if you plan to wash the quilt often, so everything shrinks together. Press well before you cut.
Keep quilting soft, not dense. A lighter quilting pattern keeps the quilt drapey and cuddly.
Let the metallic gold do the sparkle work. You do not need glitter thread too. A plain thread lets the fabric shine and keeps the quilt soft.
Take your time, it's not a race. If a corner sits a hair off, it is still handmade. It does not have to be perfect. You're your own worst critic, I promise you that.
Alrighty. Press it, cut it big, quilt it slow, and fold it with love. That is a first Christmas quilt a family will keep long after baby outgrows it.
Thanks so much for sewing along with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
