Hey everyone. Today you'll learn how to turn one pretty Christmas panel into a sweet baby quilt with almost no piecing.

Here we go.

Meet the fabric first

We're working with Adorn Circles Cream. It comes from the Adorn Collection. Makower UK designed it for Andover Fabrics.

This is a panel, not yardage. It is 100% premium cotton. It measures 44 inches by 24 inches. That shape matters here, folks.

Look at what is in the print. You get beautiful poinsettias. You get holly leaves and delicate blooms. You get sparkling snowflakes, classic ornaments, and graceful scrolls. Then there are metallic gold accents running through it.

The collection colors are rich and traditional. Think green, cream, red, and burgundy. This colorway is the cream one. That soft cream background keeps it gentle. The reds and greens still feel festive, just quieter. Perfect for a nursery at Christmas. We are not reinventing the wheel here. We let the panel do the talking.

Why this fabric suits a panel baby quilt

A panel baby quilt starts with one printed panel as the center. You add borders, layer it, quilt it, and bind it. That is the whole idea.

This panel suits it so well. The artwork is already composed for you. No tiny blocks to piece. You get a finished look, fast.

The cream ground helps too. It feels light and soft for a baby gift. The cotton presses flat and quilts easy. And at 44 inches wide, you mainly need borders to add length. Super duper cute, and super duper doable.

Materials list

  • 1 Adorn Circles Cream panel, 44 inches by 24 inches
  • 1/2 yard of coordinating cotton for borders, in cream, green, red, or burgundy
  • 1 1/4 yards of backing cotton, about 44 inches wide
  • 1 piece of low-loft cotton batting, about 40 inches by 52 inches
  • 1/4 yard for binding, cut into 2 1/2-inch strips
  • 50-weight cotton thread for piecing and quilting
  • An 80/12 needle for piecing and quilting
  • Rotary cutter, ruler, mat, pins or clips, and an iron

Finished size is about 36 inches by 48 inches. That is a lovely crib size. Want it smaller? Skip the outer border. Completely up to you.

Brief steps

Step 1: Press and square the panel. Press the panel flat with a warm iron. Square the edges carefully. Trim only a sliver at a time. Measure twice here, y'all. Panels can print a touch off-grain.

Step 2: Add the inner border. Cut four strips, 2 1/2 inches wide. Sew the long sides first. Press away from the panel. Then add the top and bottom.

Step 3: Add the outer border. Cut outer strips 4 1/2 inches wide. Sew the long sides first, then the top and bottom. Press well after every seam.

Step 4: Layer it up. Lay the backing right side down. Center the batting on top. Center the quilt top right side up. Smooth from the middle out.

Step 5: Baste it well. Pin every 4 inches or so. Good basting now means no shifting later.

Step 6: Quilt it simply. Stitch in the ditch around the panel and the borders. Then echo quilt about 1/4 inch out from the main printed shapes. Try about 10 to 12 stitches per inch. Slow down on the tight curves, or the needle can snap and your echo will wobble.

I have rushed an echo curve before. Oh my goodness, yes. One loop went wide and looked a little drunk. The fix was simple. Pull those few stitches, press lightly, and sew it again slower. Nobody could tell.

Step 7: Trim and bind. Trim the sandwich square. Join your 2 1/2-inch binding strips. Sew the binding on, fold it over, and finish it by machine for extra strength. My preference is machine binding for baby quilts. They take a beating in the wash. Hand finishing is fine too. Completely up to you.

Practical tips from my sewing room

Press everything well before you cut. A wrinkled cut turns into a wavy border, every time.

Let the metallic gold do the sparkle work. You do not need glitter thread too. Plain 50-weight thread lets the panel shine and stays soft against baby skin.

Keep your quilting spacing even. Gaps no wider than about 3 to 4 inches wash best over time.

Take your time, it's not a race. If a border sits a hair off, it is still handmade. It does not have to be perfect. You're your own worst critic, I promise you that. If I can do this, y'all can do it.

Thanks so much for sewing along with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
