Hey everyone. Today we're making a light, dreamy wall hanging that glows when the sun hits it.

Here we go.

Meet the fabric

This is the "Fantasy" Embossed Sheer Fabric from Belagio Enterprises.

It is part of the Fantasy Collection.

And y'all, delicate is the right word here.

This is a lightweight, translucent sheer.

It has that ethereal, floaty feel we all love.

What makes it special is the embossing.

An intricate pattern is pressed right into the base.

Typically floral or scrolling motifs, per the description.

That pressing creates a three-dimensional finish.

You can feel it with your fingertips.

You can see it when the light moves.

It is a lovely play of light and shadow.

Really really pretty, folks.

It is crafted from 100 percent polyester.

That gives you the airy look of silk or organza.

But with more strength behind it.

It also brings good wrinkle resistance.

Despite that delicate appearance, it is resilient.

More resilient than natural fiber sheers.

And it holds its pattern integrity over time.

It is designed to let natural light filter through.

At the same time, it softens the view.

That soft, blurred layer is perfect for this project.

It comes 56 inches wide.

That width gives us plenty to work with.

No piecing needed for a generous hanging.

The project: a sheer wall hanging

We are making one simple wall hanging.

Finished size is about 36 inches wide.

Finished length is about 48 inches long.

It hangs from a slim dowel at the top.

You see the embossing, not heavy seams.

Why does this fabric suit a wall hanging?

First, that translucency is the whole point.

Hang it near a window or a light wall.

The motifs light up and cast soft shadows.

Second, it is so lightweight.

It will not pull or sag like a heavy cloth.

A small dowel handles it just fine.

Third, that embossed texture does the decorating.

You do not need busy piecing here.

One beautiful panel says it all.

Super duper easy, and super duper elegant.

Materials

  • 1 1/2 yards of "Fantasy" Embossed Sheer Fabric
  • 1 yard of a stable backing sheer or lining, optional
  • All-purpose thread to match your fabric
  • A size 70/10 or 75/11 needle, nice and fine
  • A wooden dowel, 40 inches long
  • Two small eye screws or a ribbon for hanging
  • Sharp scissors or a rotary cutter and mat
  • Clips, a long ruler, and a marking tool
  • Your iron, on a low setting

Brief steps

First, lay the fabric out flat.

Let it rest for an hour if you can.

Sheers like to shift and float around.

Next, cut your panel.

Cut it 38 inches wide.

Cut it 52 inches long.

That gives us room for hems and a casing.

Use a ruler and cut slowly, folks.

Now hem the sides.

Fold each side edge under 1/2 inch, twice.

Stitch close to the fold.

I like a stitch length of about 2.5 millimeters.

Slow down here or the sheer will pucker.

Just like that, nice and steady.

Next, hem the bottom.

Fold the bottom edge up 1/2 inch, twice.

Stitch it the same way.

Then form the top casing.

Fold the top edge down 2 1/2 inches.

Stitch across, 2 inches down from the fold.

That pocket is where your dowel slides through.

Slide the dowel in, end to end.

Tie on ribbon or add your eye screws.

Hang it up and step back.

Move it a little until the light is right.

Completely up to you where it lives.

A window, a hallway, above a dresser.

They all work beautifully.

Practical tips

Test on a scrap first, always.

Check your tension on that scrap.

Sheers show every little pucker.

Loosen your tension just a touch if needed.

Use clips instead of pins where you can.

Pins can leave little holes in a sheer.

Press on low heat only.

And press gently, from the wrong side.

Never park a hot iron on the embossing.

You can flatten that pretty texture.

I once rushed a sheer hem in class.

It waved and rippled like a flag.

We laughed, ripped it out, and went slower.

Second try laid perfectly flat.

That is your permission beat, folks.

It does not have to be perfect.

You are your own worst critic.

Take your time.

It is not a race.

If I can do this, y'all can do it.

We're not reinventing the wheel here.

We are just letting one beautiful sheer shine.

Thanks so much for sewing along with me today.

We'll see you next time. Bye.
