Halloween night deserves better than a flimsy plastic pumpkin that cracks by the third house. A quilted trick-or-treat tote sews up in an afternoon, holds a serious candy haul, and comes back out every October for years. This one pairs a deep black outer with a bright orange lining — plus optional reflective trim, because the best treat bags are easy for drivers to see after dark.
What You'll Make
A sturdy, fully lined tote about 14″ wide × 15″ tall with a 4″ boxed bottom, so it stands up on the porch while small hands dig for the good stuff. Fusible fleece gives it body without bulk, and it folds flat for storage in November.
Materials
- Black Bella Solids Cotton Wideback Fabric Per Yard — the spooky outer fabric. One yard covers the bag body and handles, with scraps left over. Get it at Linda's.
- Orange Dry Brush Terracotta Cotton Wideback Fabric per yard — a pumpkin-bright lining that makes dropped candy easy to spot. Half a yard is plenty. Get it at Linda's.
- Floriani Heat N Sta Fleece (Fusible) 45″ x 1yd — fusible fleece that presses right onto the outer fabric and gives the tote its stand-up structure. Get it at Linda's.
- 50144 Halloween Glide Polyester Thread, 5,500-yard King Spool — for the topstitching that shows on the outside of the bag. Get it at Linda's.
- Famore 45mm Ergonomic Rotary Cutter — for cutting panels and handle strips cleanly and square. Get it at Linda's.
- Reflective ribbon or trim, about 1 yard (optional) — sewn across the front, it catches headlights on dark streets. Most craft stores carry it in the ribbon aisle.
That's 83% of the shoppable materials from Linda's. You'll also need: a cutting mat and acrylic ruler, pins or clips, an iron, and a sewing machine.
Steps
- Cut everything. From the black fabric, cut two rectangles 15″ wide × 16″ tall for the bag body, and two strips 4″ × 22″ for the handles. From the orange fabric, cut two rectangles 15″ × 16″. From the fusible fleece, cut two rectangles 15″ × 16″.
- Fuse the fleece. Following the package directions, press one fleece rectangle to the wrong side of each black panel. Let them cool flat — fused layers that cool flat stay flat.
- Make the handles. Fold each 4″ strip in half lengthwise and press. Open it, fold both long edges in to the center crease, then fold in half again for a 1″-wide strap with raw edges hidden. Topstitch down both long edges with the Halloween Glide thread.
- Sew the outer bag. Pin the two fleece-backed panels right sides together. Sew down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side with a 1/2″ seam, backstitching at the start and end.
- Box the corners. At one bottom corner, flatten the bag so the side seam sits on top of the bottom seam, forming a triangle. Measure 2″ from the point, draw a line across, and sew on it; trim the point away leaving a 1/2″ seam allowance. Repeat on the other corner.
- Sew the lining. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the orange panels — but leave a 4″ gap unsewn in one side seam. You'll turn the bag through that gap.
- Add handles and trim. Pin each handle to the top edge of the outer bag, ends 3″ in from each side seam, loops pointing down, and baste. If using reflective trim, pin a strip across the front panel and stitch its long edges down.
- Join and finish. Slide the outer bag inside the lining, right sides together, matching side seams. Sew around the top edge with a 1/2″ seam. Turn right side out through the lining gap, stitch the gap closed, tuck the lining in, and press. Topstitch 1/4″ from the top edge all the way around.
Tips
- Safety after dark. The reflective trim isn't just decoration — trick-or-treating happens at dusk, and a bag that flashes in headlights is a genuinely safer bag.
- Reinforce the handles. Candy is heavier than it looks. Stitch a small square with an X inside it where each handle end meets the bag — ten seconds, and the handles will never pull out mid-route.
- Size it to the kid. For toddlers, cut the panels 13″ × 14″ and shorten handles to 18″ so the bag doesn't drag.
- Not just for Halloween. In December prints, the same pattern makes a reusable gift tote that becomes part of the present.
