Companion Notes: Setting Yourself Up for the Series
The ExQISSite quilt is made with Pauline's Quilt As You Go (QAYG) approach: each block is layered with batting and backing and quilted on its own — on a regular domestic machine, with designs drawn and stitched using templates rather than free motion. Because every block is finished individually and joined at the end, there's no wrestling a whole quilt under the needle.
Before you cut anything
- Download the class requirements linked below the video and gather everything before Episode 2 — QAYG projects stall most often at the cutting table, not the machine.
- Choose fabrics with contrast. The sample quilt is blue and white for a reason: a clear light/dark pairing makes the drawn quilting designs read beautifully. Whatever colors you choose, keep one definite light and one definite dark.
- Prewash if you plan to. Decide before cutting — with quilt-as-you-go, blocks are handled a lot, and fabrics that bleed or shrink unevenly will show it at the joining stage.
- Label as you go. A roll of painter's tape and a pencil will save you more than once in this series; Pauline returns to folding, pressing, and labeling in nearly every episode.
Work through the episodes in order — each one adds a skill the next assumes, from cutting and sandwiching your blocks to drawing designs, quilting them, and finally joining everything with sashings.
