Hey everyone! Today we're making a cool ombre pillowcase, and you'll learn the simple burrito method that hides every raw seam.

You get 11 pieces in all.
These are quilt-shop quality fabrics, made in Japan.
Every piece is 100% cotton.

The listed end uses are crafts and quilting.
Here is exactly what you get.
You get 1 3/8 yards of mint green ombre.

You get another 1/2 yard of that same off white solid.
You get 1 yard of water blue ombre.
You get 3/4 yard of pear green ombre.
You get 3/4 yard of teal ombre.
You get 1 yard of purple ombre.
You get 1 yard of blue ombre.
You get 2 1/8 yards of teal ombre.
You get 2 yards of deep blue ombre.
And you get another 1 3/8 yards of that same deep blue ombre.
The pattern is not included.
That is fine, y'all. We're not reinventing the wheel here.
Here is what I use and why.
I love an ombre for bedding basics. The color shifts gently across one piece. No piecing needed. The off white gives clean contrast, and there is plenty left after one pillowcase.
The project: a cool ombre pillowcase
We are making one standard pillowcase.
Finished, it fits a standard pillow, about 20 by 30 inches.
Why does this bundle suit it?
A pillowcase is one big, flat panel. That is where an ombre shines. The gradient runs the full length of the bed. Quilting cotton is smooth and easy to wash, and the wide cuff frames that pretty color.
My pick is teal ombre for the body. Off white for the wide cuff. Mint green ombre for the little trim strip in between.
Or use deep blue for the body. Or purple with the same off white cuff.
Completely up to you.
Materials list
- The Boundless Coordinated Stash Builder Bundle - Color Crystals - various fabrics 16 7/8 yards total, for the body, cuff, and trim below
- For the body: one piece of teal ombre, 27 inches by the width of fabric
- For the cuff: one piece of off white solid, 9 inches by the width of fabric
- For the trim: one piece of mint green ombre, 2 inches by the width of fabric
- 50-weight cotton thread in a soft white or pale teal for seams
- Your usual tools: rotary cutter, ruler, mat, pins, iron, and sewing machine
Brief steps
Step one: press your trim strip in half, wrong sides together, so it is 1 inch wide. Press the cuff and body pieces flat too.
Step two: lay the cuff right side up. Lay the body right side up on top, raw edges even at the top. Lay the folded trim between them, raw edges even. Pin well.
Step three: roll the body up toward the top, like a burrito filling. Fold the cuff over that roll, matching its raw edge to the pinned edge. Pin again.
Step four: sew that pinned edge with a 1/4-inch seam. Go slow at the bulky spots. Slow down or the needle can complain on those layers.
Step five: pull the body out through one open end. Just like that, the cuff seam is hidden inside. Press the cuff flat.
Step six: trim the sides even. Sew the side and bottom with a French seam. First, wrong sides together, sew 1/4 inch. Trim to about 1/8 inch. Turn inside out, press, then sew 3/8 inch. Every raw edge is tucked away.
Step seven: turn it right side out, press once more, and slide your pillow in. Super duper cute, if I do say so.
Practical tips
Tip one: mind the gradient direction before you cut. Decide if the dark end sits at the cuff or the closed end. Mark it with tape so you do not flip it mid-project.
Tip two: press as you go. A pillowcase is mostly pressing, honestly. Crisp cuff, flat seams, done.
Tip three: do not chase perfect corners. It does not have to be perfect. You are your own worst critic here. Take your time, it is not a race. If I can do this, y'all can do it.
And here is the fun part, folks. This bundle holds enough for a whole stack of cases. Make a matching pair, and mix the cuff colors.
Alrighty, folks. Thanks so much for sewing along with me today.
We'll see you next time. Bye.
