Hey everyone. Today we're taking tiny 2-and-a-half-inch squares and turning them into a sweet, giftable baby quilt — simple rows, soft spacing, and no fussy pattern.
Here we go.
First, the fabric
This one is the 2025 Tula Pink True Colors 2.5-inch Charm Pack in Gray, from FreeSpirit.
What you get is right on the label. Each pack holds 42 pieces, assorted. Every piece is a mini charm, 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches. The designer is Tula Pink. The group name is 2025 True Colors.
At Linda's, this SKU sits with the pre-cuts. Its tags point to gray and Grayworks, and to multi color. That mix matters here. Gray is calm and gentle, and those assorted prints keep it interesting up close.
I reach for mini charms when I want patchwork without a big cutting session. Open the pack, sort the squares, and you can see your whole palette in a minute. Just like that.
The project: a charm pack baby quilt
A baby quilt needs to be useful first. Cover a stroller. Work for tummy time. Wash well and get softer, not fussier.
Mini charms alone finish small, y'all. Each square finishes at 2 inches with a quarter-inch seam. So we give them room. Sew them into long patchwork rows, then separate those rows with wide strips of background fabric. The charms become the confetti. The background gives the quilt its size.
Finished size is about 36 inches by 44 inches — a lovely crib and stroller size.
Why does this fabric suit it? Scale, first. A 2-inch finished square reads sweet on a baby quilt. Second, color. That gray assortment plays nicely with white, cream, or pale yellow. Completely up to you. My preference is warm white. It lets the grays sing without feeling cold.
Materials list
- 2 packs of 2025 Tula Pink True Colors — 2.5-inch mini charms, 42 pieces per pack (you will use 72 squares for the rows; save the extras)
- Background fabric: about 1 1/4 yards of quilting cotton, for the wide strips and top and bottom sections
- Batting: about 42 inches by 50 inches
- Backing fabric: about 42 inches by 50 inches
- Binding: about 1/2 yard, cut into 2.5-inch strips
- Thread for piecing and quilting
- Rotary cutter, mat, ruler, pins or clips, iron, and your sewing machine
For piecing, I like a fresh size 80/12 needle. Set stitch length around 2.0 to 2.5 millimeters. We're not reinventing the wheel here.
Brief steps
- Cut the background. Cut 3 strips at 6.5 inches by 36.5 inches. Cut 2 end sections at 9.5 inches by 36.5 inches. Set them aside in order.
- Sew the patchwork rows. Join mini charms into 4 rows of 18 squares each. Press one row left, the next right. Each row should measure about 36.5 by 2.5 inches, unfinished.
- Build the top. Lay it out top to bottom: end section, patchwork row, strip, patchwork row, strip, patchwork row, strip, patchwork row, end section. Sew in that order. Press toward the background.
- Check your size. Your top should be near 36.5 by 44.5 inches, unfinished. If a row runs a touch short, ease it in gently as you pin. Go slow at bulky joins, or a seam can shift.
- Layer and baste. Backing face down, batting in the middle, top face up. Smooth from the center out. Pin or spray-baste well.
- Quilt it your way. Stitch in the ditch on both sides of each patchwork row locks it down. Then echo a quarter inch away, or add a soft meander across the background. My preference is ditch first, meander second. Yours counts just as much.
- Bind it. Trim even, sew on your binding, miter the corners, and finish the back by machine or by hand. That last one is completely up to you.
Tips from our table in McKinney
Chain-piece those mini charms, one pair after another without cutting thread. It saves time and keeps your rows in order.
Use those 12 extra squares. Sew a few onto the backing, like a little signature strip. Oh my goodness, that makes a gift feel personal. Super duper cute, too.
I have sewn a row in backwards before. I laughed at myself and unpicked just that row. The fix is never as big as it feels.
And here is the permission part. Your tiny seams do not have to be perfect. A charm a hair off will not matter under a happy baby. You are your own worst critic. Take your time. It's not a race.
If I can do this, y'all can do it.
Alrighty. Thank y'all so much for sewing along with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
