Hey everyone. Today you'll learn how to make a cheerful bowl cozy set that saves your hands from hot soup.
Here we go.
Meet the fabric
This is 30s Playtime Primary in Eggshell.
The number on it is 33630 11.
It comes from Moda Fabrics.
The collection is 30s Playtime.
The print is called Primary.
And the colorway is Eggshell.
That is a soft eggshell ground.
It revives cheerful 1930s reproduction prints.
They feel vintage without feeling fussy.
This is quilting fabric.
It is sold by the yard.
And this yardage is 45 inches wide.
It suits vintage-style quilts, reproduction sewing, and coordinated projects.
I love this print for the kitchen.
You see that sweet 1930s charm up close.
Why it suits a bowl cozy set
A bowl cozy is a fabric holder for a hot bowl.
You set the bowl right inside it.
Then you can carry it without burning your hands.
You can also use it under a cold bowl of ice cream.
This Eggshell Primary print is perfect for that.
The soft ground looks clean and classic.
The reproduction print adds cozy, old-fashioned warmth.
And a set makes a wonderful gift, y'all.
Super duper cute, super duper useful.
We're not reinventing the wheel here.
Two squares, some batting, and four little darts.
If I can do this, y'all can do it.
What you will need
- This 30s Playtime Eggshell Primary fabric — 1/2 yard makes 4 cozies; cut eight 10-inch squares for tops and bottoms, or use a coordinating quilting cotton for half the squares
- 100% cotton batting made for bowl cozies — cut eight 10-inch squares; use only 100% cotton if you plan to use a cozy in the microwave
- 100% cotton thread, 50-weight, in cream or a soft coordinating color
- Universal or quilting needle, size 80/12
- Rotary cutter, mat, and a ruler
- Marking pencil or chalk, pins or clips, and a good iron
- A soup bowl to test the fit, about 6 inches across
Let me walk through those numbers.
A 10-inch square makes a cozy for a standard soup bowl.
It finishes about 6 inches wide at the top.
It is about 2 1/2 inches deep.
Cut 12-inch squares for a serving bowl. Completely up to you.
Set your stitch length to 2.5 millimeters.
That is about 10 stitches per inch.
Use a 1/4-inch seam allowance for the darts.
Brief steps
- Press your fabric well, then place one fabric square on one batting square and quilt an X from corner to corner to hold them together. Repeat for all eight squares.
- Fold one quilted square in half right sides together, and mark a dart 1 inch in from each folded edge and 2 inches down.
- Sew each dart with a 1/4-inch seam, then unfold, fold the other way, and sew the remaining darts. A bowl shape will form.
- Repeat the darts on a second quilted square. That will be the other half of your first cozy.
- Place two shaped pieces right sides together, pin, and sew around with a 1/2-inch seam, leaving a 2 1/2-inch opening.
- Trim corners, turn right side out, and push seams out smooth.
- Tuck in the opening, press flat, and topstitch about 1/8 inch from the edge.
- Repeat for the other three cozies, test with your bowl, and adjust dart size if you want a snugger fit.
On those darts, please go slow and steady.
Slow down or the needle snaps on thick batting layers.
Lengthen your stitch just a bit if it struggles.
I made my first dart too deep once.
Oh my goodness, that bowl sat way too low.
I just opened it up and sewed it shallower. Easy fix.
Just like that, you learn and move on.
Practical tips
It does not have to be perfect.
You are your own worst critic.
A cozy that is a little lopsided still holds soup.
Take your time, it's not a race.
One safety note, and this one matters, folks.
If a cozy goes in the microwave, everything must be 100% cotton.
That means the fabric, the batting, and the thread.
No polyester batting in the microwave, please.
If you are not sure, use it only for carrying and serving.
Press after you quilt each square.
That one habit keeps the layers flat and neat.
Make a test cozy first, then the rest will go fast.
Alrighty, that's our cheerful bowl cozy set.
Thanks so much for sewing along with me.
We'll see you next time. Bye.
