Hey everyone, today we're making a sweet panel baby quilt that looks special but sews up simple and soft.

Here we go. Let's talk fabric first. That's the star here.

This is Butterfly Fantasy Shadows cotton from In The Beginning Fabrics. It's from the Butterfly Fantasy collection. It's 100% cotton quilting fabric, 44"/45" wide. Our quilting cotton is lightweight. It tends to hold its shape even after being washed. That makes it perfect for quilting, and it's a real help for a baby quilt that will get washed a lot.

The print has a soft, dreamy feel. You've got butterflies and a geometric, abstract shadow pattern. The colors are aqua, teal, and turquoise in a pretty multi-color mix. It's gentle. It's playful. It feels just right for a nursery without being too busy.

I love this kind of fabric for babies. One beautiful print does so much work. You don't need a pile of piecing to make it look finished. Just like that, you have a thoughtful, handmade top.

Why this fabric suits a panel baby quilt

A panel baby quilt starts with one main fabric piece as your center. You frame it. You layer it. You quilt it. Then you bind it and you're done.

This cotton suits that really, really well. It holds its shape, so trimming and layering stay easy. The butterfly design gives you sweet focal points across the top. The geometric shadows give you natural lines to follow when you quilt.

My preference is to keep the piecing minimal here. Add a simple border if you like. Or don't. Completely up to you. The fabric already has the story. Your quilting just adds the soft texture a baby quilt needs.

What you'll need

  • 1 yard of Butterfly Fantasy Shadows cotton, 44"/45" wide, for the top center
  • 1/4 to 1/2 yard of a coordinating solid or soft print for a simple border, optional
  • 1 1/4 yards of backing fabric, 44"/45" wide
  • One piece of low-loft batting, about 44" x 52"
  • Binding: about 1/4 yard, cut into 2 1/2" strips
  • Matching thread for piecing and quilting
  • Your usual basics: rotary cutter, ruler, pins or clips, and a size 80/12 needle

With 1 yard for the center, you're working with about 36" of length. Add borders and you'll finish around 40" x 48". That's a lovely baby size. Big enough for tummy time. Small enough for a stroller.

Brief steps

First, press everything well. Take your time. A good press makes seams behave and layering easier.

Second, trim your main piece straight and square. If you're adding a border, sew 3" to 4" strips to the sides first, then to the top and bottom. Press seams away from the center.

Third, layer it up. Backing face down. Batting on top. Your top face up. Smooth from the center out. Pin or spray baste every 4 to 6 inches so nothing shifts.

Fourth, quilt it simply. Stitch in the ditch around your border is my pick. Then echo a few of the geometric shapes, or do a gentle meander across the open areas. Try about 8 to 10 stitches per inch. Slow down over thicker seam spots. Slow down or the needle snaps, and nobody needs that today.

Fifth, trim the sandwich even. Add your binding with 1/4" seams. Join your 2 1/2" strips, press the binding in half, and finish the back by hand or by machine. Completely up to you.

Wash it once before gifting if you like. It gets softer. The quilting puffs just a little. Oh my goodness, so sweet.

My tips from the sewing room

Tip one: choose quilting that follows the print. Those shadow lines are a free guide. Follow them and you don't have to mark much at all.

Tip two: test on a scrap sandwich first. Check your tension. Check your stitch length. Two minutes of testing saves you a lot of picking out later. Trust me, I've learned that one the hard way.

Tip three: don't stress a wobbly line. Seriously. You're your own worst critic. A baby will love the softness. The family will love that you made it. It doesn't have to be perfect. It's not a race. Take your time and enjoy it.

I've rushed a baby quilt before. I had to go back and fix a corner. A wider press and a little patience fixed it right up. We learn, we fix, we move on. If I can do this, y'all can do it.

We're not reinventing the wheel here. One pretty fabric, simple quilting, a lot of love. Super duper cute.

Thanks so much for sewing along with me today, folks. We'll see you next time. Bye.
