If you love the softness of minky but wish it behaved a little more like quilting cotton in your projects, Quilting Cuddle is the fabric Shannon Fabrics made for you. This solid beige version pairs a very low, smooth pile with minimal stretch, so you get that cozy Cuddle feel with the stability quilters and appliqué artists actually need at the machine.
What This Fabric Is
Quilting Cuddle is a soft, low-pile minky plush from Shannon Fabrics. The pile is just 1.5mm — much flatter than the longer, shaggier piles on many other Cuddle fabrics — which helps it feed more evenly, show your stitching clearly, and lay flatter in seams and quilt layers. It is made from 100% polyester, weighs 245 grams per linear yard, and comes 44 inches wide, a familiar working width if you are used to quilting cottons.
The other key difference is stretch. Where many minky fabrics have noticeable give that can let seams wander, Quilting Cuddle has minimal stretch. That gives it what Shannon describes as the perfect balance of stability and coziness — soft enough to want to touch, steady enough to cut, piece, and appliqué with confidence.
This version is a solid beige, a warm, versatile neutral. Beige works quietly in the background of a quilt, softens brighter prints without competing with them, and gives appliqué shapes a calm, natural ground. It is equally at home in nursery projects, neutral home décor, and garments where you want softness without a bold color statement.
What It's Best For
- Quilting: Use it in quilt tops where you want a plush block, as a cozy quilt backing, or in whole-cloth quilts. The low pile keeps quilting lines visible instead of burying them.
- Appliqué: The flat surface and minimal stretch make shapes easier to cut accurately, position, and stitch down — especially helpful for lettering, animals, and layered designs.
- Clothing and garments: Its lighter, flatter hand suits soft tops, vests, linings, and lounge pieces where a deep pile would add too much bulk.
- Throws, blankets, and crafts: Make simple throws, baby blankets, pillows, and soft accessories that feel warm and inviting but finish with cleaner, less bulky seams than a high-pile plush.
How to Sew with Quilting Cuddle
Quilting Cuddle is one of the most forgiving Cuddle fabrics to sew, but a few minky habits still pay off:
- Use a walking foot. Even with minimal stretch, a walking foot feeds the plush and the layer beneath it evenly and helps prevent shifting and puckering.
- Lengthen your stitch. A stitch length of 3.0 to 3.5mm gives secure seams without perforating the fabric or pulling the low pile into the seam.
- Choose clips over pins. Clips hold the layers at the edge where you can see them. Pins can get lost in even a low pile and can distort your cutting or seam line.
- Mark and cut from the back. Draw your lines on the wrong side and cut with a rotary cutter or sharp scissors. Because the pile is short, there is far less fluff than with longer-pile Cuddle, but a quick shake of cut pieces still helps.
- Press gently, if at all. Polyester does not like high heat. Finger-press seams where you can, and if you use an iron, press lightly from the wrong side on a low setting with a press cloth.
- Keep the nap consistent. Even a 1.5mm pile can catch light differently from different directions, so lay all your pieces with the nap running the same way for an even, professional finish.
Care Instructions
Care is simple, and following it keeps the fibers soft. Machine wash cold with like colors. Do not use fabric softener, and tumble dry with no heat — and no dryer sheet. Softeners and dryer sheets coat polyester fibers and can dull that soft hand over time, while high heat can damage the pile. Wash and dry it gently, and this beige staple will stay smooth and cozy project after project.
