Sewing with Ivory Cuddle Dimple: Warm Texture for Baby Blankets and Quilts
If you love minky for its softness but want a little more texture than a smooth solid, Ivory Cuddle Dimple is a lovely middle ground. This Shannon Fabrics Cuddle® minky plush has a textured, velvety surface with an adorable dimple embossed design — small raised dots set into the pile that catch the light and feel wonderful under your fingertips. In warm ivory, it is softer and more forgiving than a stark white, and it pairs beautifully with pastel baby prints, warm neutrals, and rich autumn colours alike.
What Ivory Cuddle Dimple Is
Cuddle Dimple is made from 100% polyester and measures 58/60 inches wide, a practical width that covers most baby quilts, throws, and blanket projects in a single panel. The pile is 3mm — short, smooth, and velvety rather than long or shaggy. That short pile delivers classic minky warmth and softness, while the embossed dimples add built-in texture without any printed pattern to match or line up.
Because the texture is part of the fabric itself, a solid ivory project never looks flat. The dimples add quiet visual interest and a nice skin feel — one reason this fabric is a favourite for gifts meant to be held close.
What It Is Best For
Shannon highlights quilts, baby products, and apparel for Cuddle Dimple, and ivory makes all three especially versatile. Sew it into baby blankets, loveys, burp cloths, and plush toys where gentle texture is welcome and the warm neutral works for any nursery. Use it as a quilt backing for a cosy, giftable finish on baby and throw quilts — the 58/60-inch width helps you avoid piecing a backing for many sizes. In apparel, try it for robes, cosy jackets, scarves, and linings where softness against the skin matters most. It also works well for pillows, throws, and other home projects where you want comfort without a busy print competing with the rest of the room.
How to Sew with Cuddle Dimple
Minky has a little stretch and can shift under the presser foot, but Dimple's short 3mm pile makes it one of the easier Cuddle fabrics to learn on.
- Use a walking foot. It feeds the top and bottom layers evenly, helping prevent the plush from creeping as you sew long blanket and backing seams.
- Lengthen your stitch. Try 3.0 to 3.5mm. Very short stitches can pucker and disappear into the pile, while a longer stitch sits cleanly and is easier to unpick if needed.
- Choose clips over pins. Wonder clips grip thick, plush layers securely without leaving holes or crushing the pile. If you do pin, place pins generously inside the seam allowance.
- Cut cleanly and expect a little fluff. A rotary cutter gives the neatest edges. Shake cut pieces over a bin or take them outside — Cuddle sheds fine fluff at raw edges at first, and that stops once the seams are closed.
- Press with care. Avoid pressing a hot iron directly onto the pile, which can flatten the dimples. If pressing is needed, use low heat from the wrong side, or finger-press and let the texture stay plush.
- Mind the direction. Run your hand over the fabric to feel which way the pile lies smoothest, and keep all pieces running the same way so the ivory tone looks even across the project.
Care Instructions
Keeping Ivory Cuddle Dimple soft is simple: machine wash cold with like colours, with no fabric softener, and tumble dry on no heat with no dryer sheet. Skipping softener and dryer sheets matters — they can coat the polyester fibres and dull that velvety feel over time. Wash in cold and dry gently, and the dimpled texture and warm ivory colour will stay inviting wash after wash.
For a first minky project, start simple: a self-binding baby blanket or a whole-cloth throw backed in Ivory Cuddle Dimple lets the texture do the work, sews up quickly, and makes a gift almost anyone would love to receive.
