What Grunge Basics Pool Is
Pool is a blue-aqua colorway in Grunge Basics, the much-loved blender collection from Moda Fabrics designed by BasicGrey. It is a 100% cotton fabric, 44"/45" wide, and sold by the yard, so you can order exactly the amount your pattern calls for. The color is a vibrant mix of blue aqua tones, reminiscent of a clear pool on a sunny day.
That color is only half the story. Grunge Basics are not flat solids, and they are not busy prints either. The surface is mottled and painterly, with lighter and darker areas brushed across the cloth, so a single cut reads with texture and depth instead of as one unbroken block of color. Linda's calls Grunge one of our favorite blenders ever, and Pool shows why: it does the quiet supporting work of a solid while still giving the eye something to move across.
What Pool Is Best For
As a blender, Pool earns its keep anywhere a quilt needs a watery blue-green that supports prints instead of competing with them. Use it for sashing and borders around blocks that need breathing room, as a background for appliqué where a flat solid would look stark, or as the setting fabric that ties together a scrappy mix of blues, greens, and aquas. Its tonal variation also makes it forgiving in large pieces: seams and joins blend into the mottled surface far more gracefully than they do on a true solid.
Pool works beautifully in quilts with a coastal, summer, or water theme, and it is just as useful in everyday patchwork. Try it for binding when you want a frame with movement rather than a hard edge, in backing pieces for smaller quilts, and in home décor and craft projects such as cushions, table runners, and tote bags. Because it is sold by the yard at standard quilting width, it drops straight into the yardage requirements most patterns are written for, including precut-friendly cutting plans you work out from yardage.
Cutting, Piecing, and Pairing It Well
Cut Pool the way you would any quality quilting cotton: press first, square up the cut edge, and use a sharp rotary blade so the mottled surface does not distract you from an accurate line. Grunge has no directional print to match, which makes it an easy fabric for strip piecing, half-square triangles, and long border cuts — pieces can be flipped and joined without worrying about a motif landing upside down.
For color pairing, think in watery steps. Pool sits naturally beside deeper navy and teal for contrast, softer sky blues and mint greens for a gentle gradient, and crisp whites or creams when you want the aqua to feel bright and clean. It also warms up nicely against coral, peach, and sunny yellow accents, the classic poolside combination. If you are building a palette from a print, pull the aqua note out of the print and let Pool carry it across the quilt in larger, calmer areas.
Care
Pool is 100% cotton, so care for it the way you would any quality quilting cotton. Many quilters pre-wash yardage in cool water and dry it on a low, gentle setting to preshrink before cutting, especially when the fabric will be combined with prints that have already been washed. If you skip pre-washing, expect the finished quilt to soften and take on a slight crinkle after its first wash — a relaxed look that suits Grunge's painterly surface. Wash finished quilts in cool water with a mild detergent and dry on low or lay flat to help the colors last.
If your stash is full of prints waiting for the right supporting player, a few yards of Pool is an easy answer: one watery, textured basic that blends, frames, and backgrounds without ever going flat.
