Why a Fabric Balloon Ball? A Safe, Stash-Busting Project
Many households have a "no balls in the house" rule — and for good reason. A real ball can knock over lamps, bounce off walls, and sail straight through a quilt guild meeting. The Fun Time Fabric Covered Balloon Ball gives toddlers (and party planners) the fun of a ball with none of the chaos: a soft, lightweight sphere built from your fabric stash and a balloon, shaped with two acrylic cutting templates.
At six inches across, the finished ball is the perfect size for little hands. It works indoors or outside, adds dimension and color to children's parties, family reunions, tailgates, and informal get-togethers — and best of all, it's safe for children. No batteries, no hard parts, nothing to break windows with.
What's in the Kit
The Fun Time 6 Inch Fabric Covered Balloon Ball Template Set includes:
- Two rigid acrylic cutting templates — 3 mm thick, one for the ball's side panels and one for the end pieces. Acrylic templates give you exact, repeatable shapes every time and stand up to rotary cutting.
- Complete directions to guide you through assembly.
- Two balloons in assorted colors, so you can make two balls right out of the package.
You'll also need about 1/3 yard of fabric — a classic stash-buster project that turns leftover yardage or fat quarters into something fun.
How to Make a Fabric Balloon Ball, Step by Step
- Cut your pieces. Trace the side and end templates onto your fabric and cut with a rotary cutter. The rigid 3 mm acrylic makes tracing fast and accurate — cut around the template edge with a steady hand.
- Sew the side panels together. Following the kit directions, join the side pieces along their long edges to form the ball's body, leaving an opening.
- Add the end pieces. Attach the end caps to close the top and bottom of the sphere, turning it from a tube into a ball shape.
- Insert the balloon. Slide a balloon through the opening, inflate it to fill the fabric shell (do not use helium — see the tip below), and tie it off.
- Close the opening. Tuck in the opening and secure it per the directions. Toss, bounce, and decorate.
Practical Tips for a Great Result
- Choose quilting cotton or a mid-weight cotton. Fabric that's too heavy won't gather smoothly; fabric too thin shows the balloon color through. If you love a print with white areas, pick a darker balloon color.
- Prewash and press. Pressing your fabric before tracing makes the templates sit flat and your cuts true — straight cuts mean a rounder ball.
- Use helium-free balloons only. The kit is not recommended for helium use — an air-filled balloon keeps the ball soft, light, and safely throwable indoors.
- Backstitch at stress points. The ball gets grabbed, squeezed, and thrown; a few backstitches where panels meet keep seams from popping.
- Scale the stash. The kit's two balloons make two balls, and you only need 1/3 yard per ball — a great way to use up novelty prints, sports team fabrics, or holiday leftovers.
- Mind your seam allowance. Consistent seams on every panel are what turn six flat pieces into a true sphere instead of a lopsided lump. Take your time on the first one; the second will fly.
Project Ideas
- Toddler play: a soft, quiet ball that's safe to throw in the living room.
- Party décor: make balls in theme colors for birthdays, baby showers, and graduation parties — they read beautifully from across a room.
- Game day: fabric balls in college colors are a hit at tailgates and football watch parties.
- Reunions and picnics: quick to make in multiples, and kids love taking one home.
- Gift toppers: a six-inch fabric ball makes an unforgettable, reusable "bow" on a large gift.
Care and Storage
The acrylic templates will last for dozens of projects if you treat them well. Store them flat — never leaning on edge where they can warp — and keep them out of prolonged heat or direct sun. Wipe them clean with a soft, dry cloth; avoid abrasive cleaners that can cloud the acrylic. The finished fabric balls are low-maintenance: spot clean the fabric shell, and when a balloon deflates over time, simply open the shell, swap in a fresh balloon, and close it back up for years of play.
