Every finished quilt block has one make-or-break moment: the final trim. If a block is even a little off square, seams stop nesting, points drift, and rows wave when you join them. The Quilters Select 9.5" x 9.5" Non-Slip Ruler was made for that moment — a square ruler for squaring up finished blocks, with clear markings, an ambidextrous layout, and a unique non-slip coating that holds fabric in place while you cut.
What This Ruler Is
Quilters Select non-slip rulers are designed for accuracy, convenience, and efficiency. This 9.5-inch square gives you an exact perimeter measurement, which is what makes it so useful for squaring blocks and eliminating accidental over-cuts. The markings include 1/8-inch, 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch, and 1-inch measurements, as well as multiple angles for precise marking and measuring. The one-inch perimeter lines feature a dual-number system that reads left to right and right to left, so you never lose your place or have to count backward. Quilters Select has made non-slip rulers since 2016, and the line is built for both right-handed and left-handed users.
Why Quilters Use a Square Non-Slip Ruler
A standard ruler can skate across fabric just as your rotary cutter arrives, turning a careful trim into a miscut. The non-slip coating on this ruler keeps your fabric in place for clean, accurate cuts every time, and the coating is designed to last even if the edges show wear. The square shape also does work a long ruler cannot: it lets you check two adjoining sides at once, confirm your corners are truly 90 degrees, and trim a block to a consistent finished size all the way around.
How to Use It: Squaring a Block Step by Step
- Press first. Press your block flat, seams set, before you measure. A ruler cannot square a block that is distorted by wrinkles.
- Centre the ruler. Place the ruler over the block and use the measurement markings to centre your piecing, appliqué, or focal motif inside the 9.5-inch perimeter.
- Check the numbers both ways. Thanks to the dual-number perimeter, you can read from whichever side you are standing on. Confirm the block extends slightly past the ruler on all four sides.
- Trim the first two sides. Hold the ruler firmly — the non-slip coating helps, but steady hand pressure still matters — and trim the right-hand and top edges with your rotary cutter.
- Rotate and finish. Turn the block 180 degrees, align the freshly cut edges with the exact 9.5-inch lines, and trim the remaining two sides. Your block is now square and true to size.
- Use the angles. The multiple angle markings help you check diagonal seams and mark precise lines when a block needs more than a straight trim.
Practical Tips
- Always cut away from the ruler's edge in one smooth pass; sawing back and forth chews the edge and the fabric.
- If a block is slightly small, centre it carefully and trim to what the fabric allows rather than forcing the full size and cutting into seams.
- Left-handed quilters: flip your reading direction with confidence — the numbers are printed to read correctly from your side too.
- Use the fine 1/8-inch increments for fussy, precise trims, and the bolder 1-inch perimeter lines for quick squaring of a whole stack of blocks.
Care and Storage
Store the ruler flat, out of direct sunlight, so it stays true. Keep it away from a hot iron, wipe it clean with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, and avoid harsh solvents that could cloud the markings or damage the non-slip coating. Hang it on a hook or slide it between cutting mats if drawer space is tight — just do not lean heavy objects on it.
Project Ideas
Reach for this ruler whenever a project depends on uniform blocks: nine-patches and sampler quilts that must finish at a consistent size, half-square triangle units trimmed before assembly, panel squares, embroidered blocks, and T-shirt quilt blocks that need taming into a grid. It is also handy for squaring small wall hangings and trimming mug rugs and placemats to matching sets.
