Knitted Elastic Basics: How to Get a Comfortable Stretch That Lasts
Elastic looks simple, but sewing it well makes the difference between a waistband that stays comfortable all day and one that twists or gives up after a few washes. Pellon® knitted elastic in the 1/4-inch width is a workhorse for light, close-fitting applications, and this large spool is made for sewists who use elastic again and again.
What This Elastic Is
This is a knitted elastic, 1/4 inch wide, supplied on a spool of 288 yards in white. Knitted elastic is made to provide stretch and durability through sewing and through general wear and washing — the two moments elastic is most likely to fail. The narrow 1/4-inch profile suits applications where a wide band would add bulk or overwhelm a casing, seam, or edge.
The spool is the other half of the story. At 288 yards, it is convenient and economical for anyone making multiples — garments, craft-fair items, or production sewing. Instead of buying a small card for every project, you cut exactly the length you need, in both home and industrial settings.
What It Is Best For
- Narrow waistband casings in lightweight garments and children's clothing, where 1/4-inch elastic fits without forcing the casing wider.
- Sleeve, neckline, and leg openings that need gentle gathering and recovery rather than a firm, wide hold.
- Craft projects that call for a short length of stretch — pouches, fitted covers, and other makes where elastic provides the fit.
- Batch and production sewing, where the spool keeps a consistent elastic on hand across many identical items.
It is a general-purpose choice for all types of crafting and sewing. Match it to projects that call for narrow elastic, and use a wider elastic when a pattern specifies one — width is part of how a pattern achieves its fit.
How to Use It
- Measure the wearer, not just the pattern. Wrap the elastic around the waist, wrist, or opening it will serve, stretch it to a comfortable tension, and mark the length. Elastic should feel secure without digging in.
- Cut cleanly from the spool. Cut the marked length plus a short overlap for joining the ends. A clean cut helps the ends lie flat inside a casing.
- Join the ends securely. Overlap the ends and stitch back and forth several times, or butt the ends over a small scrap and zigzag across the join, so the join does not pull apart under stretch.
- Thread it without twisting. Attach a safety pin or bodkin to one end and work it through the casing, keeping a grip on the trailing end so it does not disappear inside. Check that the elastic lies flat — a twist inside the casing will twist in wear.
- Distribute the gathers evenly. Once the ends are joined and the casing is closed, stretch and settle the elastic several times so gathers spread evenly around the opening rather than bunching in one spot.
- Stitch with stretch in mind. When elastic is sewn directly to fabric rather than floated in a casing, use a stretch or zigzag stitch and stretch the elastic gently as you sew, so the seam can move with it instead of popping.
Tips and Care
Test your tension first: the same length feels very different on a wrist opening than on a child's waist, and a quick fitting saves unpicking a closed casing. Avoid stretching it to its absolute limit when you measure — elastic worn at maximum stretch tires faster, so leave some recovery in reserve. Store the spool away from prolonged heat and direct sunlight, and keep cut lengths loosely coiled, not held under tension.
For care, follow the garment's own washing instructions. This elastic is made to hold up through general wear and washing — repeated stretching, laundering, and stretching again. If it eventually loses its snap after long use, a casing makes replacement easy: open a small section, pull the old elastic out as you thread the new one in, and close the gap.
