Some projects need more than flat support. A bag that slumps, a placemat that feels thin, or a wall hanging with no body at all often needs loft as well as stability. That is the job Pellon® TP971F Thermolam® Plus Fusible Fleece was made for: a lofty, needle-punched fleece with one-sided fusible convenience, in a handy 45" x 60" package in white.

What It Is

Thermolam® Plus is a 100% polyester fleece. It is needle-punched, which gives it its lofty, cushioned feel, yet the product description notes that it is stable and compact for easy cutting. That combination matters. You get soft thickness you can feel in the finished project, without a spongy, shifting layer that is hard to cut accurately.

It also has no grain, so it can be cut in any direction. If you are fitting pattern pieces onto an offcut, or turning a piece to make the best use of the 45" x 60" package, you do not have to stop and line everything up to a grainline first. Cut the shape you need, in the direction that fits.

This version is one-sided fusible. One side bonds when pressed, while the fleece itself is designed to remain lofty after fusing — so you do not trade away the cushion you bought it for just to get the convenience of an iron-on application.

What It's Best For

Thermolam® Plus is made for use in quilting, garments, crafts, and home decorating, and it is compatible with all fabrics, including knits. That wide compatibility makes it a useful staple to keep on hand rather than a single-project specialty.

Good uses include:

  • Bag panels that need soft structure and a padded feel
  • Placemats and other table pieces that benefit from loft and body
  • Mixed-media projects where a cushioned, stable layer helps
  • Quilting, garment, craft, and home-decorating projects that need fleece rather than a flat interfacing

It can also be used on fabric, cardboard, or wood, which opens it up beyond sewing alone. For craft and home-decorating work built on a firm base, a fusible fleece layer can add softness and finish at the same time.

How to Use It

Start by cutting your fleece to the size and shape your pattern calls for. Because there is no grain, lay your pieces out for the most economical use of the package and cut in any direction. Its stable, compact nature helps those cuts stay clean and true to size.

Place the fusible side against the wrong side of your fabric — or against the cardboard or wood surface your project uses — and press to bond, following the general fusing practice for a one-sided fusible: work on a firm, heat-safe surface, press rather than sliding the iron around, and check the bond before you move on to construction. Always test on a scrap first, especially with knits and heat-sensitive fabrics, even though Thermolam® Plus is described as compatible with all fabrics including knits.

Once fused, construct your project as your pattern directs. The fleece should stay lofty after fusing, giving bag panels, placemats, and similar pieces lasting body instead of flattening out as soon as the iron touches them.

Tips and Care

Keep an offcut file. Because this fleece cuts in any direction and works across quilting, garments, crafts, and home decorating, leftover pieces are genuinely useful for small panels, coasters, and test samples — do not throw usable scraps away.

Test your stitching on a fused scrap before sewing the real piece. Lofty layers feed differently from a single layer of fabric, so a quick sample helps you check tension, stitch length, and bulk at seams before you are committed.

Finally, match the care of your finished project to the outer fabrics and other materials you used. The fleece provides the loft and body inside; the visible fabrics will usually set the washing and handling limits.

If you want density and loft with iron-on convenience — for bags, placemats, mixed media, and more — Thermolam® Plus Fusible Fleece is a practical package to have ready.
