Why Polyester Batting Gives a Quilt Its Shape
Not every quilt is meant to lie perfectly flat. Some look best with a little lift — quilting lines that puff slightly, stitches that stand out, and a finished piece that feels soft and light without weighing down the bed. That is exactly what Pellon® Polyester Batting is made to do. Supplied here in an 81" x 96" Full Size package, this 100% polyester batting adds loft, body, softness, and definition to quilted projects.
Batting is the middle layer of the quilt sandwich, between your pieced top and your backing. It is the layer that decides how warm a quilt feels, how it drapes, and how much your quilting design shows. Understanding what polyester does — and how it differs from a flat, low-loft cotton — helps you choose it on purpose rather than by habit.
What 1/8-Inch Loft Actually Means
This batting has a loft of 1/8 of an inch. Loft is simply the thickness of the batting before quilting compresses it, and it controls the look of the finished quilt. At 1/8 inch, this is a light, even loft: enough to give quilting stitches visible definition and a softly rounded surface, without the high, puffy build of a comforter-style batting.
That definition is the real selling point. Straight-line quilting reads crisp and graphic, free-motion designs gain gentle dimension, and pieced seams sit over a smooth, consistent layer. Because the batting adds body as well as softness, the finished quilt holds its shape nicely on a bed, over the back of a sofa, or hung on a wall.
Best Uses for This Full Size Package
The 81" x 96" package is sized for a full size quilt, so it suits bed quilts without the piecing-together that smaller packages sometimes require. It is also a practical choice for large throws, duvet-style covers, and other quilted home projects where you want that light lift and a soft hand.
Polyester is a sensible pick when easy care matters. This batting is washable by hand or machine and is also dry cleanable, so quilts made for everyday use — guest beds, dorm rooms, gifts that will actually be lived with — can be laundered without special handling beyond following your fabrics' own care needs.
Quilting Distance: Stay Within 4 Inches
The recommended maximum stitch distance for this batting is 4 inches apart. That number tells you how far apart your quilting lines can be while still holding the batting securely in place. Quilt within that spacing — in a grid, in channels, or with a free-motion design that stays reasonably dense — and the batting's strength and flexibility are preserved through use and washing.
Spread lines much farther apart and any batting can shift or bunch between stitches over time. Planning your quilting pattern with the 4-inch guideline in mind from the start is far easier than fixing a quilt that has already started to move inside.
Shrinkage, Prewashing, and Finishing Tips
Expect shrinkage of 0–3%. That is a modest range: your finished quilt may relax very slightly after its first wash, giving a gentle, lived-in texture around the stitching, but it will not change size dramatically. If you want the flattest possible finish, keep that small allowance in mind when you size your top and backing.
Open the package and let the batting relax flat before you layer your sandwich, smoothing out fold lines with your hands. Baste thoroughly — pins, spray, or thread — so all three layers move through the machine as one. Trim the batting flush only after quilting is complete, and bind as usual.
Finally, wash the finished quilt gently and dry it according to your fabrics' care. The batting itself tolerates hand or machine washing and dry cleaning, so the fabrics you paired with it set the care routine.
