Polyester Batting for Queen Quilts: Light Loft, Easy Care, and 4-Inch Quilting

Polyester Batting for Queen Quilts: Light Loft, Easy Care, and 4-Inch Quilting

Some quilts need to be warm without being heavy, and easy to wash without a lot of fuss. That is exactly the job Pellon® Polyester Batting in the 90" x 108" Queen Size Package is made for. It is a 100% polyester batting that adds loft, body, softness, and definition to quilted projects — and this pre-cut queen size means you can open the package, smooth it out, and start layering your quilt sandwich.

What This Batting Is

This is a 100% polyester batting with a loft of 1/8 of an inch. Loft is simply how thick and puffy a batting is, and 1/8 inch sits at the low, easy-to-manage end: enough thickness for your quilting stitches to show with soft definition, but not so much bulk that the quilt becomes hard to fold, store, or push under a domestic sewing machine needle.

Polyester behaves differently from cotton in a few useful ways. It is light for its warmth, it tends to hold its shape, and it shrinks very little. This batting's shrinkage is just 0–3%, so the finished size of your quilt stays close to the size you planned. The queen package measures 90" x 108", sized for a queen quilt top with the usual extra allowance around the edges for layering and finishing.

What It Is Best For

Reach for this batting when you want a queen quilt that feels soft and light rather than dense and weighty — bed quilts for warmer sleepers, quilts for guest rooms and kids' beds, and everyday quilts that will be used, washed, and used again. The added body and definition help quilting patterns read clearly on the surface, whether you are stitching simple straight lines or an all-over design.

It is also a friendly choice if you find large quilts heavy to maneuver: a lighter batting makes quilting sessions noticeably easier on your arms and shoulders.

Quilting Distance: Stay Within 4 Inches

The most important number on this package is the recommended maximum stitch distance: 4 inches apart. That means your lines or motifs of quilting should be spaced no more than 4 inches apart across the whole quilt. Quilting is what holds the three layers together and keeps the batting evenly distributed inside. Spaced within that 4-inch limit, the stitching ensures the batting's strength and flexibility over years of use and washing.

A walking-foot grid, parallel lines, or a free-motion meander all fit inside that spacing. Before you start, check your design so no unquilted gap ends up wider than 4 inches — borders and corners are where wide gaps like to hide.

How to Use It

Lay your backing wrong side up and smooth it flat, then center the batting over it. Polyester batting can be springy, so take a moment to let it relax and flatten after opening the package, and smooth out any fold lines with your hands. Lay the quilt top right side up on top, then baste thoroughly with pins, spray, or large hand stitches. Because this batting is light and slightly slippery compared with cotton, generous basting pays off — it keeps the layers from shifting as you quilt.

Quilt within the 4-inch maximum distance, supporting the weight of the quilt so it does not drag and distort your stitches. Trim the excess batting and backing even with the top, then bind as usual.

Care, Tips, and Prewashing

Finished quilts made with this batting are washable by hand or machine and are also dry cleanable — just follow care that suits your quilt top and backing fabrics as well. With only 0–3% shrinkage, you can expect very little change in size after washing, so prewashing the batting is generally unnecessary for size control; if your fabrics are prone to shrinking, handle their preparation separately before layering. Store leftover batting rolled or folded loosely in a clean, dry place so it keeps its loft for the next project.
