Four Stabilizers, Four Different Jobs
Ask a room of machine embroiderers what goes wrong most often, and stabilizer choice is near the top of the list. Puckered designs, stitches that sink into the fabric, outlines that drift — most of those headaches trace back to what was (or was not) underneath the fabric in the hoop. The Pellon® Embroidery Sampler Pack brings the four main stabilizer families together in one package: four rolls, each 12 inches wide by 5 yards long, for 20 yards total. Inside you get Stitch-N-Tear Lite® (tear-away), Soft-N-Stay® (cut-away), Sol-U-Film Lite® (wash-away), and Fuse-N-Tear® (fusible tear-away) — one of each family, so you can learn what each one does on your own machine before committing to full rolls.
Tear-Away: Stitch-N-Tear Lite®
Tear-away stabilizer supports the fabric while you stitch, then tears cleanly away from the finished design. Stitch-N-Tear Lite® is the light member of that family, suited to designs and fabrics that do not need heavy support. It is a natural starting point for stable woven fabrics — think cotton, linen-style projects, and other fabrics that do not stretch — where the fabric itself does much of the work and the stabilizer just keeps everything flat and steady under the needle. When the stitching is done, support the design with one hand and tear the excess away gently so you do not distort the stitches.
Cut-Away: Soft-N-Stay®
Cut-away stabilizer stays in the project permanently. You stitch through it, then trim the excess close to the design with scissors, and what remains keeps supporting the embroidery for the life of the item. Soft-N-Stay® is the choice in this pack for fabrics and projects where tear-away is not enough — items that will be washed often, handled hard, or made from fabrics that move under the needle. Because it never leaves, the design keeps its shape wash after wash instead of gradually pulling or puckering as unsupported stitches shift.
Wash-Away: Sol-U-Film Lite®
Wash-away stabilizer does its job during stitching and then dissolves in water, leaving nothing behind but thread and fabric. Sol-U-Film Lite® is a film-style wash-away, the kind of support you reach for when any leftover stabilizer would show or change the feel of the finished piece — delicate fabrics, freestanding-style work, and projects where both sides will be seen. When the stitching is complete, the excess is removed with water according to the package directions. Always test your fabric's reaction to water on a scrap first, since the removal step is part of the process.
Fusible Tear-Away: Fuse-N-Tear®
Fuse-N-Tear® takes the tear-away idea and adds a fusible side. Instead of floating a separate sheet under your fabric or relying on the hoop alone to hold everything in place, you press the stabilizer to the wrong side of the fabric first. That bond keeps fabric and stabilizer moving as one layer — no shifting, no slipping mid-design — and when the embroidery is finished, the excess tears away like a standard tear-away. It is a reassuring option when positioning matters and you want the stabilizer exactly where you put it.
How to Choose, and Tips for Success
A simple way to think about the four: if the fabric is stable and the design is light, start with tear-away. If the item will be worn and washed, or the fabric needs lasting support, choose cut-away. If no stabilizer can remain visible or change the hand of the fabric, reach for wash-away. And if keeping everything perfectly positioned is the challenge, fuse it with Fuse-N-Tear® first. Note that color, fiber content, and application method vary between the four rolls — check the individual product packaging for the specifics of each one before you stitch.
Whatever family you pick, a few habits always pay off. Run a test stitch-out on scrap fabric with the same stabilizer you plan to use; a five-minute test saves a ruined project. Keep scissors dedicated to trimming cut-away so they stay sharp, tear tear-away slowly while supporting the stitches, and store the rolls flat or rolled — not folded — so you are not fighting creases in the hoop. With five yards of each type on hand, this sampler gives you room to experiment, make your mistakes on scraps, and learn which stabilizer your machine, your fabrics, and your designs like best.
