The Stabilizer That Leaves Nothing Behind
Every machine embroiderer knows the trade-off. Your fabric needs support while it is being stitched, or the design puckers, shifts, and distorts — but once the stitching is done, you do not want a stiff layer of stabilizer shadowing through the finished work. Pellon® 2303 Tear-N-Wash™ Embroidery Stabilizer was designed to solve exactly that problem. It is a versatile embroidery stabilizer with a two-step removal: you tear away the bulk of it, then rinse away whatever remains. The result is clean stitching with no stabilizer shadow left behind.
What Is Tear-N-Wash?
Tear-N-Wash is a sew-in embroidery stabilizer made from 100% PVA. Unlike a fusible stabilizer, it has no adhesive to iron on — you position it with your fabric and it does its work during stitching, supporting the fabric so your needle can form dense, even stitches without pulling the ground fabric out of shape.
What sets it apart is how it leaves. A traditional tear-away comes off by tearing alone, and tiny remnants can cling around detailed stitching where you cannot tug without risking the design. A wash-away dissolves completely, but can be slower to clear. Tear-N-Wash combines both: tear away the excess first for speed, then dissolve the small remnants in water for a truly clean finish. This package gives you a 12-inch width on a 10-yard roll in white, so you can cut pieces sized to your hoop and your project, with plenty on hand for a run of designs.
What Is It Best For?
Use Tear-N-Wash wherever machine embroidery needs temporary support that should not be visible or felt in the finished piece. It suits designs stitched on fabrics where leftover stabilizer would show through or change the hand of the cloth, and projects where you want the back of the work to look as tidy as the front. Because the remnants rinse away rather than needing to be picked out from between stitches, it is especially helpful around detailed designs where aggressive tearing could stress the stitching.
How to Use It
Cut a piece of stabilizer large enough to support your full design area, and layer it with your fabric before hooping or positioning for stitching. Stitch your design as usual, letting the stabilizer carry the tension of the stitches. When the embroidery is complete, remove the work and gently tear away the excess stabilizer, supporting the stitching with your other hand as you tear so you are never pulling against the design itself. Then rinse the piece in water to dissolve the remnants that remain around and behind the stitches, and let the project dry. That is the best of both worlds the product promises: the speed of a tear-away with the clean finish of a wash-away.
Tips for a Clean Finish
Tear slowly and close to the stitching, especially around curves and lettering — a gentle hand protects fine detail. If a stubborn remnant clings in a tight corner, do not force it; that is precisely what the rinse is for. Let the water do the delicate work. And because only the excess needs water to disappear, you are not soaking the whole project just to remove a bulky leftover layer.
Care and Keeping
Once the stabilizer has been torn and rinsed away, care for the finished project according to your fabric's own requirements — there is no stabilizer layer left to launder around. Store the remaining roll in a dry place so the water-soluble fibers stay ready for your next design, and cut pieces as you need them from the generous 10-yard length.
For embroidery that needs real support during stitching and no trace of it afterward, Tear-N-Wash offers a simple, practical answer.
