Back a Fall Quilt Without the Center Seam
Every quilter knows the moment: the top is finished, the autumn colors are glowing, and then comes backing — usually piecing two lengths of standard-width fabric together and hoping the seam stays straight through quilting. A wideback removes that step entirely. The Happy Fall Days Floral Forest wideback from Riley Blake Designs is 107 to 108 inches wide, so one continuous cut backs most quilts in a single piece, with a tonal floral print that makes the reverse side as considered as the front.
What This Fabric Is
This is a 100 percent cotton fabric, sold by the yard, from the Happy Fall Days collection designed by Kelsey Carlson for Riley Blake Designs. The Floral Forest print features tonal floral bouquets — flowers worked in closely related tones rather than sharp contrasts. From a distance it reads as soft, even texture; up close, the bouquets appear. That low-contrast quality is exactly what many quilters want in a backing: interest without competition.
At 107/108 inches wide, it is made to accommodate most quilt backs. Like other Riley Blake Designs fabrics in this line, it is also suitable for quilting, apparel, and home decor, though its width is the headline feature.
Why Width Changes the Backing Job
A standard quilting cotton is about 44 inches wide, so a queen-size top needs at least two panels sewn together, trimmed, and pressed flat before layering. A wideback replaces all of that with one panel. There is no center seam to drift off grain, no seam ridge for quilting stitches to cross, and no matching problem if the print is directional.
To figure yardage, measure the long side of your quilt top, add the overhang your quilter requires — many quilters add about 4 to 8 inches overall, and longarm quilters often want extra on all sides for loading — then divide by 36 and round up. That number is your yards of wideback. When it arrives, lay it out flat, confirm it covers the top plus overhang, and square the cut ends before layering. Wide fabric can shift slightly on the bolt, and a quick check at both ends prevents a short side at the sandwich stage.
Color Pairing and Project Ideas
Happy Fall Days is an autumn collection, and a tonal floral backing pairs naturally with fall quilt tops: pumpkins, leaves, warm browns, golds, rusts, and creams, as well as scrappy tops that need one calm fabric to pull them together. Because the print is tonal, it will not fight a busy top, yet it still rewards the moment someone folds the quilt back on a sofa or bed. It also hides quilting texture gracefully — the stitches add dimension without every stitch standing out against a plain solid, and small handling wrinkles show far less than on a flat solid back.
Beyond backing, that same width is useful anywhere a seam would get in the way. Try it as a whole-cloth quilt — layer, quilt the floral surface, and bind — or as curtains or a duvet cover back. Offcuts make easy pillow covers or table runners that coordinate with the finished quilt.
Cutting and Handling Tips
Work on the largest flat surface you have, and use a long ruler and rotary cutter to square the ends. Press the full piece before sandwiching; a smooth, flat back is the simplest protection against tucks. If you are sending the quilt to a longarm quilter, confirm their required overhang before you cut.
Care
Care follows the directions for this fabric: machine wash cold and tumble dry low. If you choose to prewash your backing, prewash your top fabrics as well so everything shrinks consistently. Press after washing, layer, and quilt as usual.
One seamless cut, a gentle floral surface, and no piecing before you can start quilting — that is the wideback advantage, and for a fall quilt it is hard to go back.
