Why Quilters Love 108 Inch Wideback Fabric: A Quilt Backing Guide

Every quilter knows the moment: the quilt top is finished, pressed, and beautiful — and now it needs a back. Standard quilting cotton is 44 to 45 inches wide, which means backing anything larger than a crib quilt requires piecing two (or more) lengths together. That seam down the middle works fine, but there is a simpler option that quilters increasingly prefer: wideback fabric.

What Is Wideback Fabric?

Wideback fabric is quilt-shop-quality cotton woven a full 107 to 108 inches wide — more than twice the width of standard quilting cotton. It is sold by the yard just like regular fabric, but a single yard gives you a piece roughly 36 inches by 108 inches, enough to back a queen-size quilt without a single seam. Riley Blake Designs makes some of the most popular widebacks in the business, including the Teal Sea Glass Bee Ginghams Cotton Wideback (108" wide, 100% cotton), a playful crosshatch-gingham print in a fresh sea-glass teal that sits somewhere between green and blue.

Why Use Wideback Instead of Pieced Backing?

No center seam. On light-colored or lightly quilted quilts, a pieced backing seam can shadow through to the front. A single wide piece eliminates that risk entirely.

Less fabric waste. Backing a 90-inch square quilt with 44-inch fabric takes about 5 1/4 yards in three pieces. With 108-inch wideback, you need roughly 2 2/3 yards in one cut — you buy less and throw away less.

Faster prep. No matching seams, no pressing long joins, no worrying about whether the seam lands in an awkward spot under the quilting.

The back is part of the design. Many quilters treat the backing as a second design decision. A gingham check like the Bee Ginghams print gives the reverse of the quilt a crisp, graphic look — and a busy pattern like a check hides quilting inconsistencies beautifully.

Cutting and Handling Tips

Wideback yardage is big and floppy, so give yourself floor or table space. Cut with the same rotary tools you use for quilt tops: a 45mm rotary cutter, an acrylic ruler, and a large mat. Because you are typically cutting one piece to the full size of the quilt top plus 4 to 8 inches of extra on every side for longarm loading, measure twice and cut once — there is no spare strip to fix a short cut.

One practical note: a 108-inch width means the fabric's fold creases are deep. Press the backing well before basting, and if you are longarming, load it carefully so any remaining fold lines stretch out evenly on the frame.

Color Pairing: Making Teal Sea Glass Work

The Teal Sea Glass Bee Ginghams print is a soft teal — think sea glass, not turquoise — in a classic small check. As a backing, it pairs naturally with quilt tops that contain teal, aqua, gray, navy, or warm neutrals like cream and tan. The gingham check is forgiving: small checks read almost as a solid from a few feet away, so it backs busy pieced tops without competing.

For quilting thread on this print, match the teal for an invisible finish, or choose a contrasting cream or white to let the quilting motif show. Wideback also shines beyond quilting: at 108 inches wide it is a favorite for tablecloths, duvet covers, curtains, and upholstery where you want pattern to run uninterrupted across a wide span.

Care

Like all 100% cotton quilting fabric, pre-wash in cold water and press before use if your quilt top fabrics are pre-washed — consistent shrinkage matters most when front and back meet. Expect the standard 2 to 3 percent shrinkage of quilting cotton. After quilting, machine wash gentle and tumble dry low; the cotton softens with every wash and holds its color well.

A note on stock: this particular Bee Ginghams wideback is on clearance, which means once the bolt is gone it is gone. Clearance widebacks are a smart buy for stash-building, since backing fabric in a versatile print is something every future quilt needs.

Whether you are finishing your first lap quilt or backing a queen for the guest room, wideback fabric turns the last step of quiltmaking into the easiest one. One cut, no seams, done.
