What Blue Belize Cuddle 3 Extra Wide Is
Blue Belize Cuddle 3 Extra Wide Solid Fabric from Shannon Fabrics is a smooth minky plush made from 100% polyester. It is the extra-wide version of the familiar Cuddle 3 fabric, woven at 88/90 inches wide instead of a standard craft-fabric width, so most quilt backs can be cut from a single seamless panel. The pile is a short, even 3mm, which gives it that irresistibly smooth, velvety hand without the loft of a longer-pile plush. At 480 grams per linear yard it has real substance and drape. In the solid Blue Belize colourway, the colour does the work: a clean blue backing that pairs easily with printed, patriotic, nautical, and baby quilt tops alike, and that also works for oversized throw blankets, tablecloths, and curtains, as the maker notes.
Size Math: Top Plus 8 Inches
Whatever backing you choose, plan for it to measure at least 8 inches wider and 8 inches longer than your quilt top — top width plus 8, top length plus 8. That extra gives a longarm quilter about 4 inches on every side to load, clamp, and absorb the small shifts that happen during quilting.
Now apply that rule to a 90-inch width. A throw top of 60 by 72 inches needs a backing of about 68 by 80 inches — comfortably inside one width, so about 2¼ yards covers the length. A queen top of 84 by 92 inches needs roughly 92 by 100 inches, which is just beyond a single 90-inch panel once the plus-8 allowance is added, so plan to seam, rotate the fabric if the dimensions allow, or step up to a 108-inch cotton wideback instead. Work the math before you order, not after the fabric arrives.
Cotton, Minky, or Flannel on the Back?
- 108-inch cotton wideback: stable, breathable, and seamless for the largest quilts. It loads precisely and shows crisp stitch definition, making it the default for big beds and heirloom quilts.
- Minky: plush, warm, and the softest of the three against the skin, with more stretch and drape. A 90-inch Cuddle 3 like this one suits throws and most quilts up to lap and twin sizes in one piece, and it is the backing people reach for when the quilt will be cuddled daily.
- Flannel: brushed and cosy, sitting between the two — softer than cotton, steadier than minky, but the most shrink-prone, so it benefits most from prewashing.
Choose by the job and the recipient: cotton for size and stability, flannel for brushed warmth, and minky when softness and warmth matter most.
Working Tips: Folds, Prewashing, and Loading
Pressing the fold: Minky arrives folded, and a crease can linger. Unfold it early, smooth the fold out by hand, and let it relax or hang. If you press, work from the wrong side on a low setting and keep the iron moving — direct high heat can flatten the 3mm pile.
Prewashing: Polyester minky shrinks far less than cotton, so prewashing is optional. If you wash it first, or wash a top made with cotton alongside it, follow the care rules below from the very first wash so the pile stays smooth.
Longarm loading: Load minky so its stretch runs side to side, pin evenly without pulling it taut, and roll it on smoothly rather than stretching it onto the frame. Choose quilting with a little breathing room; very dense stitching can sink into the pile and dimple the surface. Keep loose minky fibres off your work surface by shaking the cut piece out outside before you bring it to the machine.
Care
Follow the maker's directions exactly: machine wash cold with like colours, use no fabric softener, tumble dry low, and use no dryer sheet. Softener and dryer sheets coat plush polyester fibres and dull that smooth hand over time, so skipping them is what keeps this blue backing soft wash after wash.
