Hey everyone. Today we're making a bright pair of cafe curtains, and you'll learn how a free charm pattern turns little squares into a window that makes the kitchen smile.

Let's Talk About the Pattern First

Here we go. The star today is Charm Thursday (Digital Download).

This one is a little different, folks. It is not a cut of fabric. It is a free digital download pattern from Linda's Electric Quilters. Download it, print what you need, and you are ready to sew.

The listing tells us what you get. Step-by-step instructions. Fabric requirements. And cutting guides. All in one place, y'all.

It is beginner-friendly too. The listing says it helps you craft a professional-quality quilt with ease, and it is perfect for all skill levels.

And that name tells you the plan. Charm Thursday. Start it Thursday, hang it by the weekend. Those 5-inch charm squares are super duper fun for curtains, because every square shows a different print in the window light.

We're not reinventing the wheel here. If I can do this, y'all can do it.

The Project: A Bright Pair of Cafe Curtains

Cafe curtains cover just the lower half of a window. Sunshine pours in up top. You get a little privacy down low. Perfect for a kitchen or sewing room, folks.

Why does this pattern suit them? A cafe panel is just a small patchwork rectangle. Lay charm squares in rows, sew them up, and you have color with very little cutting.

Our plan makes two panels, each 7 squares wide by 6 tall. That finishes at about 31-1/2 inches wide by 27 inches tall. Measure first, then add or drop a row to fit. Completely up to you.

Materials List

  • Charm Thursday (Digital Download) — download and print the instructions, fabric requirements, and cutting guides first
  • 84 charm squares at 5 inches square — 2 charm packs, about 42 squares each, or cut squares from stash per the pattern's fabric requirements; 42 squares per panel
  • Lightweight lining fabric, about 1-1/2 yards, cut into two pieces about 32 by 28 inches — lining helps your prints hold their color in the sun
  • 14 curtain clip rings, 7 per panel, plus a cafe rod to fit your window
  • All-purpose thread to blend with your fabrics
  • Sewing machine with a size 80/12 universal needle; rotary cutter, mat, and ruler; pins or clips; iron

Brief Steps

  1. Download the pattern and read it through once. Check the fabric requirements and cutting guides before you cut a thing. Ask me how I learned that one.
  2. Measure your window and decide your finished size. Lay out each panel, 7 squares wide by 6 tall. Put favorite prints where the light hits them.
  3. Sew each row with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Chain piece where you can — it saves thread and time.
  4. Press as you go. Press, do not scrub. Press seams one way on the first row, the other way on the next, so the rows nest flat.
  5. Join the rows for each panel. Take your time lining up those seams. It is not a race.
  6. Place each panel right sides together with a lining piece. Sew the sides and bottom with a 1/4-inch seam. Leave the top open.
  7. Turn each panel right side out and press flat. Fold the top edge in twice, about 1/2 inch each fold, and stitch it down.
  8. Space 7 clip rings evenly across each top. Slide them onto your rod and hang.
  9. Step back and enjoy that window. Just like that, your pair is done.

Practical Tips From My Sewing Table

Tip one: use real numbers. I piece at about 10 to 12 stitches per inch. That holds through washings, but still rips out clean for a do-over.

Tip two: line your curtains. Sunlight is hard on pretty prints. A simple lining really really slows fading, and panels hang nicer too.

Tip three: slow down where seams stack up. At those four-square corners, a lot of layers meet. Slow down or the needle snaps.

Tip four: clip the panels up and check the length before you finish. Windows vary, y'all. A quick check beats ripping out a hem.

And here is the permission part. It does not have to be perfect. You are your own worst critic. If one square sits a hair off, nobody will notice — they will just see pretty curtains you made. Take your time. It is not a race.

Oh my goodness, the best part? This pattern is free, and a pair this size comes together in a weekend.

Thanks so much for sewing along today. I hope these curtains brighten your window for years.

We'll see you next time. Bye.
