Hey everyone. Today we're making a sweet baby quilt with a bold red star fabric, and I'll show you a simple way to let that big star shine.

Here we go.

Meet the fabric first

This one is American Freedom #28 Red Big Star from Marshall Dry Goods.

It's 100% cotton quilting fabric.

It's 45 inches wide, and it's sold by the yard.

The color is a rich, happy red.

And that big star is the whole point.

It's graphic. It's cheerful. It's easy to see from across the room.

That is exactly why I like it for a baby quilt. You don't need a complicated pattern to make it feel special. The fabric does a lot of the work for you.

Because it's a standard 45-inch quilting cotton, it presses nice and flat. It cuts clean with a rotary cutter. And it sews smooth, just like the cottons most of us reach for every day.

Why a baby quilt suits this fabric

A baby quilt is a perfect first quilt.

It's small enough to finish.

It's big enough to be really useful.

We're aiming for about 36 by 48 inches finished. That's a lovely size for a crib, a stroller, or tummy time on the floor.

With a big star print, you want big pieces. If you cut it into tiny squares, you lose the star. So we're keeping the center in one large panel. Then we frame it.

We're not reinventing the wheel here. One panel, a simple border, and soft quilting. Just like that, you have a gift that looks thoughtful and bold.

Materials list

  • 1 1/2 yards of American Freedom #28 Red Big Star for the center panel and outer border
  • 1/4 yard of a coordinating solid for a narrow inner border, if you want one
  • 1 1/2 yards of backing fabric
  • Batting cut about 42 by 54 inches, a few inches bigger than your top on all sides
  • 3/8 yard for binding, cut into 2 1/4-inch-wide strips
  • All-purpose quilting thread in red or soft white
  • A size 80/12 needle for piecing

That yardage gives you a little extra. And a little extra is never a bad thing with a directional print.

Brief steps

Step 1: Press and cut. Press your fabric first. Take a minute to look at where the big stars fall. Cut your center panel about 28 inches wide by 40 inches long, centering a star if you can. Don't stress if it's not perfectly centered.

Step 2: Add your borders. Sew a narrow inner border first if you're using one, with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Press seams toward the border. Then add 4-inch-wide outer border strips in the same red star fabric, sides first, then top and bottom.

Step 3: Layer it up. Lay your backing wrong side up and smooth it flat. Lay your batting on top. Then center your quilt top right side up. Take your time here. It's not a race.

Step 4: Baste and quilt. Pin or spray baste every 4 to 6 inches. For quilting, start with stitch in the ditch around the center panel. Then add a gentle meander or simple echo lines across the top. Keep it soft. For a baby quilt, less dense quilting means a softer drape.

Step 5: Bind it. Trim everything even. Sew your binding to the front, fold it to the back, and finish it down. Make sure those corners are tucked in nice and secure for lots of washing.

Practical tips from my table

Washability matters here, folks.

Baby quilts get washed a lot.

So keep your stitches secure. Backstitch a touch at the start and end of your binding, and check your seams before you layer.

Slow down when you quilt over thicker seam spots. That's where a needle likes to complain. Ease through it and you'll be just fine.

Want another option? Skip the inner border for a bolder, all-red look. Or keep that solid frame to give your eye a place to rest. I prefer a little frame on this one, but both ways work. Completely up to you.

And here's what I tell everybody in the store. It doesn't have to be perfect. You're your own worst critic. A baby is not checking your points. A tired parent is just grateful someone made this with love.

If I can do this, y'all can do it.

This one is super duper fun to gift. It photographs cute, it washes up sweet, and that big star just makes people smile.

Thanks for spending a little time with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
