Hey everyone. Today we're making a simple no-seam tablecloth, and I'll show you how one red leaf wideback can dress your whole table in a single cut.
Here we go.
Meet the fabric
This is the 108" Earth Tones Red Leaf Cotton Wideback Fabric per yard from P&B Textiles.
It is cotton. It is 108 inches wide. And it has a unique leaf-like, textural print.
This colorway is red. Rich, warm, and earthy. The product description tells us the Earth Tones group offers 15 rich, earthy colors. This red is the one we're sewing with today.
P&B suggests it for the back of your next quilt. They also mention curtains or a duvet cover. This fabric was made to cover a big area gracefully.
And that width is the real gift, y'all. At 108 inches wide, you can cover most dining tables in one piece. No piecing. No seam down the middle of your table. Just like that, the hardest part is done.
The project: a no-seam tablecloth
A tablecloth is just a big, nicely hemmed rectangle. It protects your table. It adds color under every meal. And it makes an ordinary Tuesday supper feel a little more finished.
Let's work with real numbers. Say your table is 40 by 72 inches. A nice drop is about 10 inches on each side. That gives you a finished cloth around 60 by 92 inches.
Why does this fabric suit it so well? First, that 108-inch width covers the 92-inch length with room to trim. Second, the leaf texture gives you pattern everywhere without anything fussy to match. Third, cotton presses well and hems cleanly. We're not reinventing the wheel here.
My preference is the red all on its own. But a contrasting binding edge works too. Completely up to you.
Materials list
- 2 yards of this 108-inch wideback — that gives you a 72-inch cut length to work from, with room to square up and hem
- Thread to match or blend — warm rust or deep red sits nicely; about 8 to 10 stitches per inch for the hem
- A long ruler, rotary cutter and mat, or good fabric scissors
- Pins or clips for the hem, and an iron — pressing is half this project, honestly
- Optional: a square ruler for neat mitered corners
Here is the math. Your finished cloth is 60 by 92 inches. Add 1 inch all around for a double-fold hem. So cut your piece about 62 by 94 inches. That fits across the 108-inch width with room to spare.
Brief steps
- Measure your table first. Write down the length and width. Then decide your drop — 8 to 10 inches per side is a friendly range.
- Press the fabric well. Smooth fabric cuts straighter and hems easier.
- Square one corner, then cut your piece to about 62 by 94 inches. Take your time here. A square start means a cloth that hangs evenly.
- Fold each edge under 1/2 inch and press. Then fold under another 1/2 inch and press again. That hides the raw edge inside the hem.
- At the corners, open the folds, trim a little bulk if you need to, and refold into a simple miter. Pin or clip all the way around.
- Stitch close to the inner fold, all the way around, pivoting at each corner. Tie off your ends cleanly, then give the whole cloth one last press.
Slow down at those corners, folks. That is where the layers stack up. If your machine hesitates on the thickest spot, stop with the needle down and ease it through. Rushing a corner is how hems go wobbly. Ask me how I know.
Practical tips from my table
First, check your hang before the final press. Drape the cloth on the table. Look at all four sides. A quick trim now beats a lopsided drop later.
Second, let the print do the work. The leaf texture forgives a crumb or two between courses, and a simple bowl in the middle is plenty of centerpiece.
Third, save your trimmed strips. Cut four 18-inch squares from the leftover width, hem them the same way, and you have matching napkins. Super duper easy.
And here's the permission part. It does not have to be perfect. You're your own worst critic. Your family will see a warm red table ready for supper. They will not be measuring your drop with a ruler.
If I can do this, y'all can do this. One wideback, one afternoon, and a table that looks loved. Really, really simple.
Thanks for sewing along with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
