Hey everyone! Today you are going to learn how to turn a pretty pink wideback into a reversible duvet cover you can flip whenever the room needs a change.
Meet the fabric
This one is the Bud To Bloom Azelias Pink Wideback from PBS Fabrics.
It is 100% cotton.
The width of fabric is 116/118 inches.
It was made by Paintbrush Studio Fabrics.
The print is all about azelias and flowers.
Pink is the color in the name.
The tags also call it multicolor, with multiple colors in the print.
It is listed as a cotton sateen wideback, and it is sold by the yard.
With 116/118 inches to work with, you can cut a wide panel in one piece.
No center seam down the middle of your bed.
Why it suits a reversible duvet cover
A reversible duvet cover has two finished faces.
You use one side today.
You flip it tomorrow for a different look.
Use this azelia print on one face for the floral side.
Pair it with a calm coordinating fabric on the other face.
Or use this print on both faces if you love it that much.
Completely up to you.
Two looks, one cover, and no extra bedding to store.
Materials list
- Bud To Bloom Azelias Pink Wideback — 2 3/4 yards for one face of a queen cover, or 5 1/2 yards if you want this print on both faces
- A coordinating fabric for the second face — 2 3/4 yards if you are not using the azelia print on both sides
- Your duvet insert to measure — a typical queen insert is about 88 by 92 inches
- Closure of your choice — 6 to 8 buttons and buttonholes, snaps, or a zipper cut to your cover width
- Four short ties or loops for the inside corners, each about 8 inches long
- Thread to match — I reach for a 50-weight cotton for seams like these
- A fresh needle — an 80/12 or 90/14 universal or quilting needle is a good starting point
- Pins, a long ruler, marking tool, and scissors or a rotary cutter
Brief steps
Step 1: Measure and cut. Measure your insert across and down. Add 1 inch to each measurement for a 1/2-inch seam allowance all around. For an 88 by 92 inch queen insert, cut each face 89 by 93 inches. This wideback gives you the width in one cut.
Step 2: Prep the closure edge. Pick one short end for the opening. Hem that edge on each face with a simple folded hem, about 1/2 inch, and press it flat.
Step 3: Add the corner ties. Pin a short tie inside each corner of one face. These tie to the insert corners and keep it from bunching up inside. I learned that one the hard way, after a week of fighting a lumpy duvet.
Step 4: Sew the three closed sides. Place the faces right sides together. Pin well. Sew around the two long sides and the top short side with a 1/2-inch seam. Use a stitch length around 2.5 mm. Backstitch at the start and end.
Step 5: Finish the opening. Turn the cover right side out through the open end. Press the edges. Add your buttons, snaps, or zipper along that hemmed edge, spaced evenly, about every 10 to 12 inches for buttons.
Step 6: Put it on. Turn the cover inside out, tie the corners to your insert, then roll and shake it right side out. Smooth it flat. Done.
Practical tips
Press as you go, and support the weight of these big panels on your table so the fabric does not drag and stretch your seams. For a twin cover plan on about 2 yards per face, and for a king about 3 yards per face — but measure your own insert first, folks, because inserts vary. Wash and press both face fabrics the same way before you cut, so they behave the same later.
Slow down at the corners.
Pivot with the needle down, and take your time.
It is not a race.
And here is your permission beat for today.
If a seam wobbles a little on the inside, nobody sees it.
You are your own worst critic on this one.
It does not have to be perfect to be soft, useful, and really really pretty on the bed.
If I can do this, y'all can do it.
Thanks so much for sewing along with me today.
We will see you next time. Bye.
