Hey everyone! Today you are going to learn how to sew a sweet little waist apron that makes baking day feel even happier.

Meet the fabric

This one is the Blue Patch Perfect Sweet Tooth cotton from PBS Fabrics.

It is 100% cotton.

The width of fabric is 43/44 inches.

It was made by Paintbrush Studio Fabrics.

It is part of the Patch Perfect collection.

It is also listed as OEKO-TEX CERTIFIED.

The color named in the title is blue.

And the print is pure sweet tooth, folks.

Think cherries scattered across the blue.

Think donuts and little stars too.

The product notes call it a lightweight quilting cotton.

It tends to hold its shape even after being washed.

That makes it perfect for quilting and crafting structured garments.

It is sold by the yard, so you can order what your project needs.

Why it suits an apron

A waist apron is a simple, useful rectangle.

It ties at your waist.

It keeps flour off your clothes.

And a big pocket holds the little things.

A timer, a recipe card, a wooden spoon.

This cotton holding its shape matters here.

Aprons get washed a lot, y'all.

Jam happens. Cocoa happens. Life happens.

You want that apron crisp after washing.

The cheerful print helps too.

Cherries and donuts belong in a kitchen.

I am making one apron today.

It finishes about 27 inches wide.

It finishes about 20 inches long.

One and a quarter yards makes one apron.

That covers the body, pocket, and ties.

Completely up to you on the style.

Add a second pocket if you like.

Materials list

  • Blue Patch Perfect Sweet Tooth Cotton 43"/44" Fabric Per Yard — 1 1/4 yards for one waist apron with ties and a patch pocket
  • Thread — I reach for a 50-weight cotton in blue or a soft neutral that blends
  • A fresh needle — an 80/12 universal or quilting needle is plenty for these layers
  • Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat — for clean, straight cuts
  • Pins or clips, a safety pin for turning ties, an iron, and your sewing machine

Brief steps

Step 1: Wash, press, and cut. Pre-wash and press your fabric. Cut the apron body at 28 by 21 inches. Cut two pocket pieces at 8 by 9 inches. Cut tie strips 4 inches wide, joined to about 72 inches total.

Step 2: Hem the apron body. Fold each side and the bottom under 1/4 inch, then 1/4 inch again, and press. Stitch with a stitch length around 2.5. Leave the top raw. The waistband will cover it.

Step 3: Make the pocket. Sew the two pocket pieces right sides together on three sides, with a 1/4-inch seam. Turn, press, fold the top under, and topstitch across it. Just like that, a sturdy pocket.

Step 4: Place the pocket. Center the pocket about 4 inches down from the top. Stitch down one side, across the bottom, and up the other. Backstitch well at both top corners. Those corners take the most stress.

Step 5: Make the waistband and ties. Fold your long strip in half lengthwise, right sides together. Sew the long edge and both ends, leaving a middle gap. Turn it with your safety pin, press, and tuck in the raw edges.

Step 6: Attach and finish. Match the centers of the tie strip and apron top. Pin the apron top inside the gap, then topstitch the strip closed. Press, tie it on, and go bake something. Here we go.

Practical tips from my sewing table

Fussy cut with a little patience.

Center a donut right on that pocket.

It is super duper cute on the finished apron.

Go slow at the pocket corners.

Those layers stack up fast.

Slow down there, or the needle can snap.

Press every hem before you stitch it.

And measure your ties on your own waist.

Seventy-two inches ties a nice bow for most folks.

Want longer ties? Cut them longer.

Completely up to you.

Here is the permission part.

It does not have to be perfect.

You are your own worst critic.

If one hem wobbles a little, leave it.

Nobody is inspecting your apron mid-recipe.

Take your time. It is not a race.

If I can do this, y'all can do it.

Make one for your own kitchen first.

Then, completely up to you, make one for your favorite baker. Alrighty.

Thank you so much for sewing along with me today.

We'll see you next time. Bye.
