Sewing Luxe Cuddle Without Tears
Five rules cover it. One: Luxe Cuddle has nap and stretch on the crossgrain - cut everything with the pile running the same direction, using a rotary cutter and just the tip through the backing so you shear less pile. Two: cut in one pass, then take the piece straight to the shaker or dryer on air-only; the fuzz is a cutting event, not a sewing event. Three: use a walking foot, a 90/14 stretch needle, a 3.5mm stitch, and polyester thread - Glide runs beautifully in minky. Four: pin like your project depends on it, because it does - SewTites magnetic pins or quilting clips every two inches. Five: never iron the pile; steam from the back only, or the texture flattens permanently.
How Much Do You Need?
Luxe Cuddle runs 58-60" wide (Mirage runs 80"). A baby blanket takes 1 yard plus a yard of coordinating Cuddle 3 for the back. An adult throw takes 2 yards of 60" or 1.75 yards of Mirage 80". Backing a quilt, buy the quilt length plus 8 inches - and remember minky does not shrink, so no prewashing needed, ever.

- Can I use Luxe Cuddle on a longarm?
- Yes - minky backs longarm beautifully because the stretch is stabilized once loaded under proper tension. Load with the stretch running side to side, reduce top tension slightly, and use a fresh needle. Thousands of the quilts through our shop have Cuddle backs.
- How do I wash a Luxe Cuddle blanket?
- Cold or warm machine wash, tumble dry LOW or air dry. High heat is the only thing that ruins minky - it melts and mats the polyester pile. Washed correctly, it gets softer over years and never pills like cheap fleece.
- Does Luxe Cuddle shed?
- Only at the cut edge, and only until it is sewn. Shake cut pieces outside or tumble them on air-only, and once seams are sewn the shedding is over for the life of the blanket.
- Which Luxe finish is best for a baby blanket?
- Hide and the smoother textures are both baby-safe and machine washable. Most makers put a print or Cuddle 3 solid on top and a Luxe texture on the back, so little hands get the plush side. One yard of each makes a standard 30" x 36" baby blanket.
