Sunburst Batiks is Moda's premium batik quilting cotton collection — the hand-dyed, wax-resist look of traditional Indonesian batik in premium quilting cotton. Each colourway has the distinctive mottled, layered colour depth of authentic batik fabric, providing richness and visual complexity that flat-dyed fabric cannot replicate. Frequently Asked Questions

What makes batik different to piece and quilt?

The tighter weave — batik cotton runs denser than standard quilting cotton, giving crisp seams, minimal fray, and sharp stitch definition. Use a fresh sharp needle and expect appliqué edges to behave beautifully; the density is a feature.

Why do batik quilts favour variegated thread?

Because the fabric itself shifts colour continuously — a variegated thread in the palette's family melts into the mottling where a flat solid sits on top of it. Batik tops and variegated polyester are the classic longarm pairing.

Do batiks bleed in the wash?

Quality batiks like Sunburst are rinsed in production, but saturated reds and purples deserve a colour catcher in the first wash — same precaution as any deeply dyed cotton. After the first wash they're stable for the quilt's life.
