Frequently Asked Questions
Where do trims appear in quilting?
Edges and accents — lace inside a binding, piping between border and body, fringe on quilted pillows and table runners, and crazy-quilt seam embellishment. A half-inch of piping in the binding seam is the classic 'how did you do that' finish.
How is piping with a lip sewn in?
The lip is the seam allowance — sandwich it in the seam with a zipper or piping foot riding beside the cord, and the corded edge emerges perfectly on the seam line. It's an upholstery technique quilters borrow for cushions and bags.
Do iron-on crystal trims survive washing?
With gentle care — press thoroughly per instructions, wash cold and inside-out, and skip the dryer. For hard-use items, a few anchoring stitches through the trim base back up the adhesive; costume pieces that rarely wash need no such insurance.
