Hey everyone. Today you will learn how to turn one soft pink dot fabric into a sweet little baby quilt.
Here we go.
Meet the fabric first
This is Basics Irregular Dots Rose Pink from Santee Printworks.
It is a 100% cotton quilting fabric.
It measures 44"/45" wide.
It is sold by the yard.
The brand is Santee Printworks, from TC Studio.
The collection is called Basics.
The color is Rose Pink.
The pattern is irregular dots.
That pattern is the charm here, y'all.
The dots are not stiff or perfectly matched.
They wander a little.
They feel happy and handmade.
The product notes call it a dependable dot basic.
It suits bindings, backgrounds, and scrap quilts.
I agree with all three.
But a soft pink like this begs for a baby quilt.
It is gentle without being boring.
And those dots give your eye something fun to follow.
Why it suits a baby quilt
A baby quilt gets a lot of jobs.
It warms a crib.
It covers a stroller.
It becomes a clean spot for tummy time.
So you want a print that feels cheerful up close.
You also want piecing that stays forgiving.
Irregular dots help with that.
No dot has to land in an exact spot.
Your seams can be honest, not perfect.
We are making a simple patchwork baby quilt.
Finished size is about 36" by 42".
That is a handy size for a newborn gift.
Big enough to use.
Small enough to finish in a weekend.
Super duper cute, too.
Materials list
- 1 1/2 yards of Basics Irregular Dots Rose Pink for the patchwork top
- 1/2 yard of a soft coordinating print or solid for accent squares
- 1 1/4 yards of fabric for the backing
- Batting at least 40" by 46"
- 1/3 yard for binding, cut into 2 1/2" strips
- Thread to blend with the pink
- Rotary cutter, mat, and a clear ruler
- Pins or clips, and your sewing machine
That yardage gives you a little extra.
I like a little extra.
It takes the pressure off your first cut.
Brief steps
First, press all your fabric.
Take your time here.
Wrinkles will lie to your ruler.
Cut the rose pink into 6 1/2" squares.
Cut 24 of those.
Cut 18 accent squares the same size.
Lay them out in 7 rows of 6 squares.
Alternate pink and accent as you go.
Step back and look once.
Move one square if you want.
Completely up to you.
Sew each row together with a 1/4" seam.
Press seams in opposite directions row to row.
Then join the rows.
Your top should measure about 36 1/2" by 42 1/2".
Next, layer backing, batting, and top.
Smooth from the center out.
Pin or baste every 4" to 6".
Now quilt it.
You can stitch in the ditch along the seams.
You can echo each square about 1/4" inside.
You can meander gently across the whole top.
My preference here is stitch in the ditch.
It is clean.
It lets the dots stay the star.
But a soft meander is lovely too.
Go slow at the seam joins.
Slow down or the needle can deflect and snap.
Nobody needs that surprise today.
Trim the edges even.
Join your 2 1/2" binding strips.
Sew binding to the front.
Miter the corners as best you can.
Fold it to the back and finish it down.
Just like that, you have a baby quilt.
Practical tips from my table
Prewash or not is your call.
Baby quilts get washed a lot.
So whatever you choose, choose it for every fabric.
Mixing washed and unwashed can pucker seams later.
Keep your seam allowance steady.
A true 1/4" keeps your rows lining up.
If a row comes out a touch long, do not panic.
I have done that more than once.
The fix is simple.
Ease it in with a few extra pins.
Sew with the longer row on the bottom.
The feed dogs will help you.
It works really really well.
And here is your permission beat, folks.
It does not have to be perfect.
Your squares do not have to match to the thread.
You are your own worst critic.
The baby will just feel loved and warm.
The parents will see handmade kindness.
Take your time.
It is not a race.
If I can do this, y'all can do it.
Thanks for spending a little time with me today.
We'll see you next time. Bye.
