A Cozy Scarf and Hat Set in Silver Solid Cuddle 3

Hey everyone. Today you will learn how to sew a cozy scarf and hat set from a wide cut of Silver Cuddle.

Here we go.

Meet the fabric first

This is the 3 Yard Cuddle 110" Cut in Silver, from Shannon Fabrics.

It is their classic Solid Cuddle 3 minky plush.

It comes as a wide back pre-cut.

You get 3 yards, and the width is 108/110 inches.

That is a whole lot of soft, y'all.

The surface is smooth and ultra-soft.

The pile is 3mm, so it feels plush without getting bulky.

It is 100% polyester.

And Silver is a soft, clean gray. Calm and modern, and pretty with just about any coat.

The product notes list apparel among its ideal uses. I agree, folks.

Care is simple too. Machine wash cold with like colors. No fabric softener. Tumble dry with no heat, and no dryer sheet.

Why this fabric suits a scarf and hat set

A scarf and hat have one main job.

Feel good right against your skin.

Your neck and ears notice scratchy fabric fast. This Cuddle is soft on contact, and that 3mm pile gives warmth without a heavy wrap.

I really, really like the size math here. Cut one set, and you will still have plenty left for more sets, a throw, or a quilt back.

We are not reinventing the wheel here. A scarf is two long rectangles sewn and turned. A simple hat is a rectangle sewn into a tube with a closed top. That is it.

Materials list

  • 3 Yard Cuddle 110" Cut - Silver — about 3/4 yard for one adult set, with fabric left over
  • Rotary cutter, long ruler, and a big cutting mat
  • Pins or clips — lots of them, every 1 to 2 inches
  • Walking foot for your machine
  • 90/14 ballpoint or stretch needle
  • Polyester thread to match, and a 3.0 to 3.5mm stitch length
  • Chopstick or turning tool for the scarf corners
  • Optional: a folded cuff band from the same fabric

Brief steps

1. Shake the fabric outside first. Cut edges shed a little fluff. That is normal.

2. Watch the nap. Rub your hand down the fabric. Smooth is the direction you want running down the scarf length, and down the hat from top to brim.

3. For the scarf, cut two rectangles at 9 by 62 inches for a finished scarf about 8 by 60 inches. Want it shorter for a child? Cut at 7 by 48 inches. Completely up to you.

4. Lay the scarf rectangles right sides together. Pin or clip every 1 to 2 inches. This fabric likes to travel, folks. Pinning tells it to stay put.

5. Sew around the scarf with a 1/2-inch seam allowance and that 3.0 to 3.5mm stitch length. Leave a 4-inch opening on one long side for turning. Slow down at the corners, and pivot with the needle down.

6. Trim the corners, turn right side out, and push the corners out gently. Tuck the opening in, pin well, and topstitch around the whole scarf about 1/4 inch from the edge.

7. For the hat, cut a rectangle about 23 by 18 inches for a head about 22 inches around. Fold right sides together, sew the side seam, then sew the top closed with gentle curves or darts so it sits nicely. Turn right side out, and fold up a 2-inch cuff if you like.

8. Try both pieces on, and adjust the cuff and length before you call it done. Just like that.

Practical tips from my table

Test on a scrap first. Let the feed dogs do the work. Do not pull it through, or your edges will wave at you.

Use a walking foot. It feeds the layers together, so your rectangles line up instead of shifting.

Check the nap before you sew. I have sewn a panel the wrong way. Oh my goodness. The silver looked like two grays in the light, and yes, I fixed it. Learn from my seam ripper, y'all.

Go slow at thick spots, especially where the hat top comes together. Slow down or the needle can deflect.

Wash as directed before wearing, and that soft pile will stay soft.

And here is your permission beat, because we all need one: it does not have to be perfect. A slightly soft corner still makes a warm, beautiful set. You are your own worst critic. Take your time. It is not a race.

If I can do this, y'all can do it.

This is a super duper cozy little make from a very generous pre-cut.

Thanks for sewing along with me today, folks. We'll see you next time. Bye.
