Hey everyone. Today you are going to learn how to turn a crisp star wideback into a cozy lap quilt, simple and whole-cloth style.
Here we go. No tiny pieces. No fussy piecing. Just a quilt you will actually finish.
The fabric is Patriotic Stars, by Choice Fabrics. The collection celebrates classic Americana, with timeless star motifs in bold red, white, and navy colorways.
This one is Navy Stars on White. Scattered navy stars. Crisp white ground. Clean and bright, plain and simple.
It comes as a 3-yard package of 108-inch wide fabric. That is 100% cotton. And it is continuous yardage, made for seamless quilt backing.
Now, backing fabric usually hides on the back. Not today, y'all. We are putting this print right on top, where those navy stars can be the whole design.
Why this fabric suits a lap quilt
Width is the first reason. A lap quilt is bigger than a baby quilt, but smaller than a bed quilt. At 108 inches wide, one piece covers a generous lap size with no seams and no piecing to match.
Pattern is the second reason. These stars are scattered, not in strict rows. That is forgiving. No fussing over perfect alignment when you cut.
Cotton is the third reason. It presses well. It feeds well. And it quilts up soft, which is exactly what you want in a quilt that lives on the couch.
Materials list
You will need:
- The 3-yard package of this 108-inch fabric for the lap quilt top
- Batting cut about 4 inches larger than your finished size on each side
- A backing fabric, also oversized — a solid navy or white you already like works well
- Thread for quilting — soft white blends in, navy shows a little more, completely up to you
- A size 90/14 needle for quilting through all three layers
- Binding fabric, about a half yard, cut into 2.5-inch strips
- Safety pins or spray for basting, plus your usual rotary cutter, long ruler, mat, and iron
I like white thread on this one. It keeps the quilting quiet and lets the stars do the talking. Navy thread gives you more contrast. Both are right.
Brief steps
First, pick your finished size. I am making mine 60 by 72 inches. That is a real lap quilt — knees covered, feet covered, room to share a corner. Press your fabric well, then trim one piece to 60 by 72 inches. Save the rest for a pillow front later.
Second, layer it up. Backing on the bottom, wrong side up. Batting in the middle. Your star fabric on top, right side up. Smooth from the center out. Take your time here. Wrinkles basted in are wrinkles quilted in.
Third, baste well. Pin every 4 inches or so. I once skimped on pins and spent more time fixing a tuck on the back than I saved. We fixed it, and I pin better now.
Fourth, quilt it. Try a simple, gentle meander that travels around the stars. Or echo a few stars about a quarter inch out and fill the rest with straight lines. Aim for balanced stitches, about 8 to 10 stitches per inch. We are not reinventing the wheel here.
Fifth, trim square and bind. Measure twice, trim once. Join your 2.5-inch binding strips, press them in half, and sew them on with a quarter-inch seam. Just like that, you are done.
Practical tips
Check your tension on a small scrap sandwich first. Top and bottom stitches should meet in the middle of the batting. Five minutes of testing saves a whole afternoon of picking out stitches.
Slow down when you turn a corner or echo a star point. Ease around it, one or two stitches at a time. Rush that turn and your line can wobble, or the needle can snap.
And here is your permission beat. Your meander will not be perfect. Mine never is. You are your own worst critic, and nobody curled up under this quilt is measuring your quilting lines. It does not have to be perfect to be warm and really really loved. If I can do this, y'all can do it. It is not a race.
Super duper useful, this one. Couch, porch, car ride, gift for a star-loving friend. Alrighty.
Thanks so much for spending a little time with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
