A Festive Tablecloth in Patriotic Stars White Stars on Red

Hey everyone. Today you are going to learn how to turn one wide piece of star fabric into a tablecloth with no center seam.

Here we go. No piecing. No patchwork. Just measuring, cutting, pressing, and hemming.

The fabric is Patriotic Stars, by Choice Fabrics. The collection celebrates classic Americana, with timeless star motifs in bold red, white, and navy colorways.

This one is White Stars on Red. Scattered white stars. Vibrant red ground. Bold, cheerful, and ready for a party.

It comes as a 3-yard package of 108-inch wide fabric. That is 100% cotton. And it is continuous yardage, made for seamless quilt backing.

Now, most folks meet this fabric as a backing. Fair enough. But a print this happy deserves the top of the table, not the underside of a quilt.

Why this fabric suits a tablecloth

Width is the first reason. A tablecloth needs to cover the top and still drop over the edges. At 108 inches wide, this fabric does that in one piece. No seam down the middle. No line running under your centerpiece.

Length is the second reason. Three yards is 108 inches long. So your package starts out a full 108 by 108 inches. That is a big square of fabric, with room to trim down to your table.

Pattern is the third reason. The stars are scattered, not lined up in strict rows. That is forgiving when you cut and hem. Nothing has to match at the corners.

Cotton helps too. It presses crisp, hems flat, and washes up easy after a cookout.

Materials list

You will need:

  • The 3-yard package of this 108-inch fabric, with leftovers for napkins or placemats
  • Matching thread — red blends into the ground, white picks up the stars
  • A size 80/12 or 90/14 needle for clean stitching through the hem layers
  • A long ruler or tape measure, at least 108 inches of measuring reach
  • Rotary cutter, big mat or a clean floor, and a good hot iron
  • Pins or clips for holding the hem before you sew
  • Optional: a second fabric for matching napkins, cut about 18 inches square each

I like red thread here. It disappears into the background and lets the white stars do the talking. If you want a little contrast line at the edge, pick white. Completely up to you.

Brief steps

First, measure your table. Add the drop you want on each side. I like about 10 to 12 inches of drop. For a 48 by 72 inch table, that means a finished cloth around 68 by 92 inches. Measure twice, folks. Really.

Second, press the whole piece well. Then square up one long edge and cut your cloth 2 inches bigger than finished size, all the way around. That extra gives you the hem. Work on the floor if your table is too small. I have done that more than once.

Third, fold and press each edge in a half inch, then another half inch. That tucks the raw edge inside. Pin as you go.

Fourth, miter the corners. Open the corner folds, fold the point in at 45 degrees, then refold both edges. It takes a minute. It looks so much cleaner than a bulky lump of fabric.

Fifth, sew the hem close to the inner fold, about 8 to 10 stitches per inch. Pivot at each corner with the needle down. Just like that, the edge is finished.

Sixth, give it a final press. Lay it on the table. Step back and grin.

Practical tips

Wash and press before you cut, if you plan to wash the finished cloth. Cotton can shrink a little, and you want that shrink out of the way first, not after your hems are sewn.

Slow down at the corners. Those mitered layers get thick. Ease through them, one or two stitches at a time. Rush it and your line can jump, or the needle can snap.

Use your leftover fabric. From one package you can cut matching napkins or a short runner for the sideboard. Same stars, whole table coordinated. Super duper fun for the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, or any summer cookout.

And here is your permission beat. Your hem will not be perfect. Mine never is. You are your own worst critic, and nobody at that picnic is flipping your tablecloth over to grade the corners. It does not have to be perfect to look really really good. If I can do this, y'all can do it. Take your time, it's not a race.

Thanks so much for spending a little time with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
