Hey everyone. Today you are going to learn how to turn one bold wideback into a whole-cloth quilt, with no piecing required.
Here we go. This fabric does the talking all by itself.
The fabric is Patriotic Stars, from the Supreme Backings line. The print is Large White Stars on Navy. Big, bold white stars. Deep navy ground. Classic Americana, plain and simple.
It comes as a 3-yard package. That is 108 inches long, cut from 108-inch wide fabric. It is 100% cotton. And it is continuous yardage, made for seamless quilt backing.
Now, backing fabric usually hides on the back. Not this one, y'all. Those large stars are too good to hide. So we are flipping the job. This wideback becomes the top, the star of the whole quilt.
That is the beauty of a whole-cloth quilt. No seams to match. The print is the design, and your quilting is the texture.
Why this fabric suits a whole-cloth quilt
Width is the first reason. At 108 inches wide, one piece covers a generous quilt without piecing. A 3-yard cut gives you 108 inches by 108 inches to work with. That is a big square of fabric, folks.
Scale is the second reason. Large stars need room to breathe. Cut them into small pieces and you lose them. Keep the cloth whole and every star stays bold and clear.
Cotton is the third reason. It presses well. It feeds well. And it quilts up soft, which is exactly what you want in a quilt you will actually use.
Materials list
You will need:
- The 3-yard package of this 108-inch fabric for the top
- Batting cut about 4 inches larger than your finished size on each side
- A backing fabric, or a second piece of wideback, also oversized
- Thread you like for quilting — a neutral, navy, or soft white all work
- A size 90/14 needle for quilting through all three layers
- Safety pins or spray for basting, plus your usual rotary cutter, ruler, and mat
Completely up to you on thread color. I like a soft white on this navy. It shows the quilting and ties in with the stars. Navy thread disappears more. Both are right.
Brief steps
First, press your fabric well. Lay it out flat and look at the stars. Decide your finished size before you trim anything. A 90-inch square makes a generous throw-plus or a lovely bed topper. A smaller 60 by 72 inch cut makes an easy lap quilt, with fabric left over.
Second, layer it up. Backing on the bottom, wrong side up. Batting in the middle. Your star fabric on top, right side up. Smooth from the center out. Take your time here. Wrinkles basted in are wrinkles quilted in.
Third, baste well. Pin every 4 inches or so. I mean it. This is a big, simple top, and good basting keeps everything honest.
Fourth, quilt it. Stitch in the ditch is not an option here, since there are no seams. So travel around those stars instead. Echo the edge of each star about a quarter inch out. Then echo again. That echo quilting makes the stars puff up just a little, and oh my goodness, it looks really really good.
If freehand echo work feels like a lot, use straight lines instead. A simple grid, on point or square, also works. We are not reinventing the wheel here.
Fifth, trim square and bind. Measure twice, trim once. Bind in navy, red, or white — whatever you have that frames those stars nicely. Just like that, you are done.
Practical tips
Slow down when you echo a star point. Those sharp turns are where folks rush. Ease around the point, one or two stitches at a time, or the needle can snap and your line can wobble.
Check your tension on a scrap sandwich first. Aim for balanced stitches, about 8 to 10 stitches per inch for this kind of quilting. Top and bottom should meet in the middle of the batting.
And here is your permission beat, because we all need it. Your echoes will not be perfect. Mine are not either. You are your own worst critic, and nobody else is measuring those quarter inches. It does not have to be perfect to be warm, useful, and loved. If I can do this, y'all can do it.
This is a super duper easy way to get a big, patriotic quilt finished fast. Picnic on it. Gift it to a star-loving grandkid. Alrighty.
Thanks so much for spending a little time with me today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
