Hey everyone. Today you're going to learn how to add bold, no-sew appliqué to a dark pillowcase, with clean edges and no pinning.

First, the product itself

Let's start honest, y'all. This is not fabric. It's the helper that makes your appliqué stay put.

HeatnBond UltraHold for Dark Fabrics is a paper-backed, iron-on, no-sew, double-sided adhesive. It is made for bonding fabric without the need for pinning.

This roll is 17 inches wide by 3 yards long — 43 cm x 2.74 m. That is a lot of appliqué from one roll, folks.

UltraHold's no-sew bond is stronger than traditional fusible webs. The solid sheet adhesive means edge-to-edge coverage for appliqué shapes, without puckering or bunching.

You can draw or print directly on the paper backing to design your pieces.

It is for use on fabric. It can also be used with foil, lamé, felt, suede, cardboard, leather, and wood. It is heat activated, permanent, and made in the USA.

Here's what I use and why. Dark fabrics show every wobble. A solid sheet holds the whole shape flat, right to the edge, so your design reads clean.

We're not reinventing the wheel here. Let the adhesive do the holding, and you do the creating.

The project: an appliqué pillowcase for dark fabric

We're making a standard pillowcase, about 20 by 30 inches finished, with a big appliqué on the front. Think one star, a moon, or three simple hearts. Big shapes work best here.

Why does this adhesive suit this project? A pillowcase gets handled every day. It gets pulled, folded, and washed. You need a bond that stays, and UltraHold is built for that.

And please hear me on this. It doesn't have to be perfect. You're your own worst critic, I promise. If a point is a tiny bit soft, it still looks handmade and loved. Take your time. It's not a race.

Materials

  • Heatnbond UltraHold Iron-On Adhesive Roll For Dark Fabrics, 17 in x 3 yds
  • Dark pillowcase fabric — 1 yard of cotton, cut to your pillowcase pattern, or a ready-made dark pillowcase
  • Appliqué fabric — light or bright cotton scraps, about 1/4 yard total, that pop against the dark ground
  • Iron, sharp scissors, pencil or printer for your design, and a ruler
  • Optional: a pressing sheet to protect your ironing surface

Brief steps

Here we go. Pre-wash all your materials without fabric softeners. Pretest the adhesive on a scrap before you start your project.

One: draw or print your appliqué design directly on the paper backing of the UltraHold. Keep it bold and simple. Cut it out roughly for now.

Two: preheat your iron to medium heat, no steam. Place the adhesive on the wrong side of your appliqué fabric, paper liner facing up.

Three: press and hold the iron on the paper liner for 2 seconds. Repeat until the entire surface is bonded. Let it cool completely.

Four: now cut each shape out neatly on your drawn line. Peel off the paper liner. Just like that, your shape is ready.

Five: lay your pillowcase front flat. Position each shape, adhesive side down, on top of your project. Step back and look. Nudge until you smile.

Six: press the iron on the fabric with firm pressure for 8 seconds on each section. Work across the whole shape until every piece is bonded. For thicker fabrics, a little additional time may be required.

Seven: let it cool, then finish sewing your pillowcase together if you made it from yardage. Slip it on the pillow. Super duper cute.

Remember, do not sew through UltraHold. If stitching is required on a future project, use HeatnBond Lite instead. Completely up to you which project you pick.

If I can do this, y'all can do this.

Practical tips

Never touch the iron directly to the adhesive sheet. Always keep that paper liner or fabric between the iron and the adhesive.

Give the edges their full time. Slow down or a corner can lift later — edges are where a bond earns its keep.

I have peeled the liner too early while it was still warm. It stretches. Let it cool first.

Choose contrast on purpose. A pale yellow moon or a crisp white star on navy or black reads from across the room.

Need to wash it? Machine wash warm and dry on low heat or no heat, following your fabric's own washing directions. Avoid repeated or excessive ironing to the fused area after bonding.

Alrighty. One roll, one pillowcase, and plenty left for the next idea.

Thanks for sewing along with me today, y'all. We'll see you next time. Bye.
