Hey everyone. Today you're going to learn how to sew a simple winter tablecloth from one wide piece of fabric, with no seam down the middle.

Here we go.

The fabric first

This is the Black Snowflakes Cotton Wideback Fabric Per Yard from Timeless Treasures.

Let's start with the numbers.

It is 108 inches wide.

It is 100% cotton.

It weighs 144 grams per square meter, a nice quilting weight.

It is digitally printed, and it is sold per yard, so you order the length you need.

The print is the whole story here, folks. Black snowflakes cover the fabric in a classic pattern. It looks sophisticated without trying too hard. Just a clean winter look that works all season long.

Here's why the width matters so much. A tablecloth needs one wide, smooth piece. Regular quilting cotton is not wide enough, and a pieced seam would sit right where your plates land. At 108 inches wide, this fabric covers a generous tablecloth in a single cut. No center seam. Just like that.

The project: a winter tablecloth

A tablecloth is the fastest room makeover I know. You hem one big rectangle. You lay it on the table. The whole dining room looks dressed up for supper.

Mine finishes at about 68 by 92 inches. That fits a table around 44 by 68 inches, with about a 12-inch drop on every side. Measure your own table before you cut. Add 24 inches to the width and 24 inches to the length for that same drop. Completely up to you.

This fabric suits a tablecloth for three reasons. First, the snowflakes read beautifully at table scale. Second, that 108-inch width gives you the whole cloth in one piece. Third, cotton is soft, washable, and easy to hem. Spills happen. Wash it and move on.

Let's do the math together.

Your finished cloth is 68 by 92 inches. For a double-fold hem, add 4 inches each way. Cut your piece 72 by 96 inches.

From this wideback, the 108-inch width gives you the 96-inch side. The 72 inches comes off your yardage. Plan on 2 yards. That leaves you a nice leftover strip, perfect for matching napkins later.

If I can do this, y'all can do it.

What you need

  • 2 yards of this wideback fabric for the tablecloth described above
  • Thread to match the black ground
  • A long ruler or tape measure, and a flat surface big enough to lay out the cut
  • Rotary cutter or good fabric scissors, plus plenty of pins
  • Your sewing machine with a regular presser foot
  • An iron, because pressed hems sew so much straighter

Brief steps

One. Press your fabric well. Lay it flat and check the snowflake direction. Decide which way the pattern runs down your table.

Two. Cut your piece to 72 by 96 inches. Measure twice here, folks. A big cut is forgiving, but only if you measure first.

Three. Fold each edge under 1 inch and press. Fold under 1 inch again and press. That hides the raw edge inside the hem.

Four. At the corners, open the folds, trim a little bulk at a 45-degree angle, then refold. That gives you a neat mitered corner without a lump.

Five. Pin the hem all the way around. Pins every 4 to 6 inches keep a long hem honest.

Six. Sew the hem close to the inner fold. I sew these at about 8 to 10 stitches per inch. Go slow around the corners, pivot with the needle down, and keep your line steady.

Seven. Press the finished cloth flat. Lay it on the table and step back. Oh my goodness, that is a good look.

Tips from my table to yours

Wash and press the fabric before you cut. Cotton can shrink a little. Shrinking first means your finished cloth stays the size you planned.

Try two hemming options on a scrap corner. Topstitch close to the fold like I do, or use a decorative stitch if your machine has one you love. I prefer the plain topstitch here, so the snowflakes stay the stars. Completely up to you.

Here's your permission beat, and I mean it. A long hem does not have to be perfect. A tiny wobble on the underside edge will never be seen at the table. You're your own worst critic. Take your time. It's not a race.

We're not reinventing the wheel here. One wide cut, four pressed hems, and a table that looks ready for company. Super duper easy, and really really satisfying.

Alrighty. Thanks for sewing along with me today, folks. We'll see you next time. Bye.
