Hey everyone. Today we're turning one pretty charm pack into a fresh table runner for your home.
Here we go.
Meet the fabric
This is the Blue Bella Solids Egg Blu Charm Pack Precuts, from United Notions.
It is a Moda precut.
The group name is Bella Solids.
The designer is listed as the Moda Group.
And the stock number is 9900PP 85, if you keep notes.
Inside the pack you get 42 assorted pieces.
Each square measures 5 inches by 5 inches.
That is your classic charm pack size, ready to sew.
The color here is called Egg Blu.
The tags also call it aqua and light turquoise.
So think soft blue-green, calm and fresh.
There is no print to match up.
There is no direction to fuss over.
You just open the pack, sort your squares, and sew.
These squares were made in Korea, per the product details.
And because this is a solid precut, the color does the talking.
Your seams and your quilting lines become the design.
I really like that for a table runner.
It brightens the table without shouting.
And it goes with white dishes just beautifully.
The project: a patchwork table runner
We are making one runner, about 13.5 inches by 45 inches.
That fits most dining tables and sideboards nicely.
It also leaves room for plates at each setting.
Here is why this fabric suits a runner so well.
Those 5-inch squares are already cut straight and even.
You skip the long cutting session completely.
The solid Egg Blu keeps the look clean and simple.
Food, flowers, and candles bring enough color on their own.
And a long row of squares shows off that soft turquoise.
You can lay every square out in a neat, even order.
Or shift the shades around for a scrappier feel.
Completely up to you.
I like a simple grid for this one.
It feels calm, and the quilting can shine.
Materials
- 1 Blue Bella Solids Egg Blu Charm Pack Precuts (42 squares, 5 inches by 5 inches)
- 30 charm squares for the runner top, with spares left over
- 1 piece of batting, about 16 inches by 48 inches
- 1 piece of backing fabric, about 16 inches by 48 inches
- Binding strips, cut 2.5 inches wide, about 130 inches total joined length
- Thread to match or blend, and your usual sewing supplies
Brief steps
- Lay out 30 squares in 3 rows of 10. Each finished square is 4.5 inches, so your top will measure about 13.5 inches by 45 inches.
- Sew the squares in each row together with a quarter-inch seam. Press each row as you go.
- Join the 3 rows, nesting the seams where you can. Give the top a good final press.
- Layer the backing, batting, and top. Baste it well so nothing shifts.
- Quilt it your way. Stitch in the ditch is easy here. Echo quilting looks great too. Or try a simple meander across the whole runner.
- Trim the edges even, add your binding, and stitch it down. Just like that, you are done.
On my machine, I keep things simple for table quilting.
A walking foot helps the layers travel together.
I slow my stitching down over the thick seam joins.
And I check my tension on a spare square first.
Those leftover squares are perfect test pieces, y'all.
Nothing wasted, and no surprises on the real top.
Practical tips
Give yourself permission to keep this easy.
It does not have to be perfect.
A seam that is off a hair will not ruin a runner.
You are your own worst critic here.
Take your time, it is not a race.
Pressing is the quiet hero in this project.
Press each row before you join the rows.
Your corners will line up with a lot less fuss.
One honest warning, right at the moment of risk.
Slow down when you quilt over the thicker seam joins.
Slow down or the needle snaps on that bump.
My first runner came out a little wavy at one end.
The fix was simple and a little humbling.
I pressed better, trimmed the layers together, and it laid flat.
We're not reinventing the wheel here.
We're sewing squares into something useful and really really fun to use.
If I can do this, y'all can do it.
Thanks so much for sewing along with me today.
We'll see you next time. Bye.
