712MD-P - Mini Duckbill Applique Scissors (4in)

Hey everyone. Today you'll learn a simple safety routine for small, sharp appliqué scissors, so your good cuts never come with a bad surprise.

Here's the problem, y'all. The best appliqué scissors are small. They are sharp. And they love to hide. A pair left open under fabric is easy to grab wrong. A pair left loose in a project bag can poke a finger. I have reached into a tote and found scissors I forgot were in there. Oh my goodness, that wakes you up fast.

Here's what I use, and why. These are the Famoré 712MD-P Mini Duckbill Appliqué Scissors. They are 4 inches long. That mini size fits right in your hand for close appliqué trimming. The flat duckbill blade rides under the top layer. It lifts what you are cutting and helps protect what is underneath. Famoré built these with industry educators in mind. I keep mine at my appliqué station, and I put them back in the same spot every single time. If I can build that habit, y'all can do it.

What You Need

  • 712MD-P - Mini Duckbill Applique Scissors (4in)
  • A small tray, magnetic dish, or padded case for your scissors
  • A clearly marked sharps container for worn blades and bent pins
  • A soft, dry cloth for wiping blades
  • Your appliqué project, with the work area cleared first

The Steps

  1. Clear the table before you cut. Push scraps, pins, and extra tools to one side. Give yourself one clean work area. Small scissors disappear in clutter. A clear table is step 1, every time.
  2. Check the tool before you start. Open and close the scissors 2 or 3 times over the table. Do they move smooth? Are the tips clean and straight? Stop if anything feels off. A quick check takes 10 seconds.
  3. Cut with the blades in view. Slide the flat duckbill under the top layer. Keep the blade edge where you can see it. Turn the work, not your wrist. Small, steady bites. Just like that, you stay in control.
  4. Close the scissors the moment you pause. Here is the big habit, folks. Done cutting for even a minute? Close them. Set them down closed, points facing away from you, inside your tray. Never lay them open on fabric. Never tuck them under your project.
  5. Pass them closed, handles first. Handing scissors to a friend? Close them first. Offer the handles, not the points. Say, "Here you go," so they know it's coming. No tossing. No reaching across a moving blade.
  6. Carry them in a case, never loose. Going to class or guild? Put the closed scissors in a padded case or sheath. Not in a pocket. Not loose in a tote with your fabric. Loose points find fingers, and they dull fast banging around.
  7. Use your sharps routine for the worn-out stuff. Bent pins, dull needles, and damaged blades go straight into your sharps container. Not the regular trash. Not a coffee cup on the table. Seal the container when it is full, and replace it with a fresh one.
  8. Park the scissors in their home spot. Finish your session the same way, every time. Wipe the blades. Close the scissors. Put them back in the tray or case, in the same place. Future you will thank present you.

Tips From My Table

  • It doesn't have to be perfect. Habits build one session at a time. You're your own worst critic, folks. Take your time. It's not a race.
  • One pair, one job. Keep these scissors for appliqué fabric only. Paper, tape, and packaging will dull a fine edge fast, and a dull edge makes you push harder. Pushing harder is where slips happen.
  • Slow down at the moment of risk. Reaching, rushing, and cutting toward your other hand — those are your warning signs. Stop, reset, then cut. Completely up to you, but reset is my pick every time.
  • Teach the routine out loud. Sewing with kids nearby? Say the steps as you do them. Closed to carry, closed to pass, closed to park.

A Quick Care Note

Wipe the blades with a soft, dry cloth when you finish. Store the 712MD-P closed, points protected, in a dry spot away from moisture. Keep the pivot clean and free of lint. A clean, closed, parked pair is a safe pair — and it stays sharp for the work you love.

Alrighty, folks. Small scissors, simple habits, safer sewing. Close them, case them, and park them in the same spot every time. Super duper easy once it's routine. Thanks for sewing along today. We'll see you next time. Bye.
