Frequently Asked Questions
What fabric is best for summer quilts?
100% cotton is the top choice for summer quilts — it's breathable, washable, and easy to work with. Lightweight cotton wideback fabrics (108" wide) are especially popular because they eliminate the need for a center seam on quilt backings. For baby quilts and snuggle blankets, Shannon Cuddle minky offers a soft, plush alternative that's still light enough for warmer months.
What width are the wideback fabrics?
Most of our cotton wideback fabrics are 108" wide, with some available at 118" or 120". The Shannon Cuddle extra-wide solids are 88/90" wide, and the Shannon Digital Cuddle prints are 58"–60" wide. All are sold by the yard.
Do I need to pre-wash these fabrics?
Pre-washing is always a personal preference. Most quilters pre-wash cotton fabrics to remove sizing and prevent shrinkage, especially if the finished quilt will be washed frequently. Cuddle minky fabrics should generally not be pre-washed — they're best washed after the project is complete.
Which fabrics work best for quilt backings?
Our 108" cotton wideback fabrics are specifically designed for quilt backings — one yard covers a standard throw-size quilt without any piecing. Moda Grunge Basics, Flow, Thatched, and Stonehenge widefabrics are especially popular backing choices thanks to their soft hand and large variety of colors.
What are Moda Grunge Basics?
Moda Grunge Basics are a beloved line of 100% cotton blender fabrics designed by BasicGrey. The subtle, textured "grunge" pattern works beautifully as a background or blender in any quilt. Available in both 44/45" and 108" widths, they come in dozens of colors — including an extensive range of summer shades like turquoise, aqua, seafoam, mint, peach, orange, coral, lavender, and more.
What is Shannon Cuddle fabric?
Shannon Cuddle is a premium polyester minky plush fabric made by Shannon Fabrics. It's known for its incredibly soft, velvety texture — perfect for baby quilts, blankets, stuffed animals, and cuddle quilts. The extra-wide Cuddle 3 (88/90") is the same fabric used in many quilt kits here at Linda's. The Digital Cuddle line features printed designs on that same luxurious base fabric.
Can I use these fabrics for apparel?
Yes! Many fabrics in this collection work beautifully for summer apparel — especially the lighter-weight cotton wovens, the Cuddle minky for cozy knit-style garments, and the floral and tropical prints. Check individual product listings for fiber content and care instructions.
How much fabric do I need for a quilt backing?
For a standard throw quilt (approximately 60" x 80"), you'll typically need about 2–2.5 yards of a 108" wideback fabric. For a twin, 3–3.5 yards; for a queen, 3.5–4 yards. Our product pages include estimated yardage guidance to help you plan your project.
