Backing Fabric Yardage Calculator Guide — How Much Do You Need?
Calculating how much backing fabric to buy is one of the most common questions quilters face. Buy too little and you can’t finish the quilt; buy too much and you waste money. Here’s the formula and ready-made estimates for every standard quilt size.
Backing Yardage by Quilt Size (44" Fabric)
| Quilt Size | Top Dimensions | Yardage Needed (44") | Wideback (108") |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baby / Crib | 40"×50" | 2.5–3 yds | 1.5 yds |
| Lap / Throw | 60"×72" | 4–4.5 yds | 2.5 yds |
| Twin | 60"×80" | 5 yds | 2.75 yds |
| Full | 72"×90" | 5.5 yds | 3 yds |
| Queen Most Common | 90"×108" | 6–6.5 yds | 3.5 yds |
| King | 108"×108" | 9.5–10 yds | 3.5 yds |
44" vs 108" Wideback: Yardage Savings
44" fabric
- Requires piecing seams for most bed quilts
- Queen backing = 6+ yards (two widths seamed)
- More fabric variety and print options
- Lower price per yard usually
108" wideback
- No seaming needed for most quilts
- Queen backing = ~3.5 yards
- Saves time & money for longarm studios
- Higher price per yard but less total yardage
Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra backing do I need for a longarm?
Longarms require more overage than home machine quilting — typically 6–8 inches on all sides (vs 4 inches for home quilting). This extra overage accommodates the leader attachment and side pinning. For a 90"×108" quilt top, cut longarm backing at minimum 102"×120".
Can I piece the backing from different fabrics?
Absolutely — pieced backings are a beautiful way to use up yardage and create an interesting back. Just make sure all fabrics are similar weight and pre-wash status so they behave consistently during quilting and washing.
What if my backing fabric has a directional print?
Directional prints require careful planning — a horizontal seam in a backing with a vertical print will flip the design. Either cut with the print running consistently in one direction (which may require more yardage) or choose a non-directional print for easier backing piecing.
