▶ Our VerdictIf you’re only buying one square ruler, buy the 12.5". It covers the widest range of standard quilt block sizes and is the most versatile square on the cutting table. The 6.5" is a powerful addition for small blocks, HST trimming, and travel, but it shouldn’t be your first square.

Who Should Choose Which?

Buy 6.5" if you…

  • Make lots of small blocks (3"–6" finished)
  • Do lots of half-square triangle trimming in small sizes
  • Travel to retreats or guilds frequently
  • Already have a 12.5" and need to add small square capability

Buy 12.5" if you…

  • Are buying your first square ruler
  • Make traditional 12" finished blocks
  • Do a variety of quilt block sizes
  • Want the most versatile single square ruler

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do square rulers have an extra half inch?

The extra half inch (6.5" for a 6" block, 12.5" for a 12" block) allows for seam allowances. When you trim a block to 6.5" square, after sewing into a quilt top with 1/4" seams on each side, the block finishes at exactly 6".

Do I need both sizes?

Many quilters eventually own both. Start with the 12.5" as your primary square, then add the 6.5" when you find yourself making many smaller blocks.

Can I use a square ruler as a straight-cutting ruler?

Yes — a square ruler works fine for short cuts. For long strip cuts (2.5" strips across a full yard of fabric), a 6" x 24" strip ruler is more practical because it spans the full fabric width.
