The mat is inset into the surface rather than laid on top, so it cannot shift under the ruler while you cut. Independent leg adjustment matters more than overall height — it lets you tilt the surface toward you for long cuts and level it again for piecing.
There is extra work space to the left of the cutting mat for tools and templates.
