Advent Calendar with Fusible Fleece Pockets That Stay Crisp All December

Hey everyone. Today you'll learn how to make an Advent calendar with 25 pockets that stay crisp from December 1st all the way to Christmas morning.

Here's the problem with most fabric Advent calendars. The pockets start out cute. By December 10th, they're sagging.

Little hands tug those pockets hard. Candy goes in. Candy comes out. Every single day.

The fix is simple. Back every pocket with fusible fleece. It gives each pocket real body. The edges stay sharp. The openings stay open instead of collapsing shut.

If I can do this, y'all can do it. Take your time. It's not a race.

Materials

  • Backing fabric: one piece, 19 inches by 27 inches
  • Pocket fabric: five strips, each 19 inches by 4 1/2 inches
  • Fusible fleece: five strips, each 18 1/2 inches by 3 3/4 inches, plus one piece 18 1/2 inches by 26 1/2 inches for the backing if you want extra body
  • Numbers 1 through 25: fabric paint and a stencil, iron-on numbers, or a fine fabric marker
  • 80/12 universal needle and thread to match
  • A wooden dowel, 20 inches long, plus ribbon or twine for hanging
  • Press cloth, marking pencil, clips, and your iron

Notice the fleece is cut a little smaller than the fabric. That keeps it out of the seam allowances. Less bulk. Flatter edges.

About picking your fleece: light to medium is the sweet spot. Heavy stabilizer fights little fingers. Too thin, and you're sagging by mid-month. Test a scrap first. It should feel like a playing card in a sweater. Soft, but it holds its line.

How to make it

  1. Prep the backing. Press the large fleece piece to the wrong side of the backing fabric, if you're using it. Use a press cloth. Hold the iron 10 to 15 seconds per spot, then lift and move. Don't slide it. Sliding can shift the fleece before it bonds.
  2. Fuse the pocket strips. Press one fleece strip to the wrong side of each pocket strip, centered so there's a small fabric margin all around. Let every strip cool flat before you touch it again. Warm fleece can stretch. Ask me how I know.
  3. Hem the pocket tops. Fold the top long edge of each strip down 1/4 inch, then another 1/4 inch. Press. Topstitch close to the fold at a 2.5 mm stitch length. This folded edge is the mouth of your pockets, so sew it nice and straight.
  4. Add the numbers. Mark five equal sections across each strip, about 3 3/4 inches apart. Stencil, paint, or iron one number in the center of each section. Do this now, while the strips are flat. Numbering finished pockets is a wrestling match you do not need.
  5. Pin the first row. Lay the bottom strip on the backing, right side up, leaving room for your bottom hem. Pin or clip the sides and bottom.
  6. Stitch the dividers. Sew vertical lines at each marked section, from the hemmed top edge down to the bottom of the strip. Backstitch at the top edge. That's the stress point where little hands pull. Slow down there.
  7. Repeat, row by row. Overlap each new strip so its bottom edge covers the row below, spacing rows about 5 inches apart. Stitch the bottom edge down, then sew its dividers. Work from the bottom row up to number 1 at the top.
  8. Finish the edges. Trim the whole panel to 18 1/2 inches by 26 1/2 inches. Bind all four sides with a double-fold binding, just like a quilt. A 2.5 mm stitch and a walking foot help keep the layers traveling together.
  9. Add the hanging sleeve. Sew a fabric tube or two ribbon loops to the top back. Slide the dowel through, tie on your twine, and hang it where small hands can reach the low pockets.

Tips and variations

Test one pocket first. Slip a wrapped candy and a small toy inside. The pocket should hold both without gaping. Too loose? Move your divider lines in by 1/4 inch. Completely up to you.

Mix the fills. Not every pocket needs candy. Try a note, a tiny ornament, or an activity card. "Bake cookies." "Call Grandma." Those are the pockets folks remember.

Make it a countdown garland. Skip the backing panel. Sew the 25 pockets as separate mini pouches, clip them to a length of twine, and string it across the mantel.

Care is easy. Spot clean through December. At season's end, fold it flat. Next year it will hang just as crisp. Just like that.

Don't worry if a divider line wobbles a little. You're your own worst critic. The kids will only see pockets full of surprises.

Thanks for sewing along with me, folks. We'll see you next time. Bye.
